mcpapa Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Basketball season for 2014/2015 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Highlands? Remember, please be constructive.
RCC9 Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) I think this team has the ability to be the 9th champion, but like all the teams, need to keep things together. One of the advantages I think this team has is chemistry. These kids all like each other and hang out together. They have been playing together for awhile now and only lost one senior from a pretty good team from last year. It's been said this team does not "wow" you with athleticism and that may be true. They may not jump the highest or be the fastest kids on the floor, but what they are is smart and all have great skills and fundamentals. 1-8 can all handle the ball very well (including their 6 footer and 5'10 girl that used to be a PG). They are shoot very well too. Also, going back the chemistry, they all have a sense of where the other one will be and what they get out of each other (strengths and weaknesses). They are also tenacious on defense and have the ability to guard all over the court and changes defense quickly. they have a very high bball IQ as a team! So most of you are right...they don't "wow" you. But they play very well as a team, shoot it well and get after you on defense. Then you look up at the end and this "non-athletic" team beat you and you wonder how that happened! BTW...they are way more athletic that people give them credit for. They just all know their roles and their limits. As far as weakness, they can play soft at times. And there are times when they are not shooting well, they get comfortable running the same things and find themselves in a dogfight instead of beating a team they should handle. They are sometimes too unselfish as well. There are times one of them just has to take over the game and I think they struggle at times understanding who that is. With this team, that could mean it's a different player every night. They have 6-7 players that could go for 20 any night, depending on match ups. Edited September 30, 2014 by mcpapa
RCC9 Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Sorry, the PG I was referring to is my daughter.
horst muhlmann Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Having watched this group of young ladies for several years (my niece played from 2007-2010 for Coach Richey), I believe that they have an excellent chance of finally getting to Bowling Green. Very tenacious and unselfish group and as RCC9 says, any one them could score 20 on any given night, making them a matchup problem for practically every 9th region foe. All 5 starters return and if memory serves me correctly, all 5 averaged between 8-12 points per game last season. They can run up and down the floor if needed, or pack it in and play smothering defense. Looking forward to a great season.

Very smart and versatile group! All 5 starters are back and 7 of the top 8, With a couple of those girls who were very young and first year varsity girls last year. They are now a year older and have a year of varsity under their belts. One only being just an 8th grader!
dribbledrive Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Looks like things are starting to heat up. Haven't had a chance to read the threads in awhile. So here it goes. I like the bluebirds in the ninth, but I think H.C., Holmes, N.D., and a couple sleepers like Dixie and Conner. Sorry RCC9 to use this thread for my next opinion, but as a NCC supporter I wish all this transferring would stop. I know things happen in families but I wish the girls could start and finish together. Sorry.

Clyde Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Would I be off base in saying that the teams most likely to win the 9th this year are Holy Cross and Highlands?
RCC9 Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Would I be off base in saying that the teams most likely to win the 9th this year are Holy Cross and Highlands? Not at all, but I think I would add Holmes as well. And even though ND may be a little down from previous years, I think they are still in the mix because of the way they play (physical) and still have some outstanding athletes on the roster. Holmes is scary if they put it all together. And HC has the potential to be very good. I think they all have weaknesses and need to prove themselves and I think it all comes down to match ups and who can force their style of play on the other one. I think Conner, Beechwood and Ryle will have nice teams as well and you better not fall asleep on them.

RCC9 Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 You listed 7 teams. You running for mayor? Hey, I'm hard on ya when it's needed, but complimentary when I respect ya! And yes, vote RCC9 in 2014. May not get a lot of votes in Independence though!

May not get a lot of votes in Independence though! I read the football threads and yes, you get 0 votes in Independence. I am wondering though, would you even get the majority Ft Thomas? :lol2: And BTW, I really like this Highlands team...and their coaching. I would have no problem putting them pre season #1 in the 9th. Holmes and Holy Cross both will have tons of potential, so they will be in the mix for sure. I certainly would not be surprised to see one of them win the 9th come season end. It will just depend on those things like chemistry, injuries (none please) and keeping those bad off nights away while playing the ones that matter come regional tournament time.

Jayhawk95 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Of these girls above, I know most are 2, if not 3 sport athletes that have not only made it to their respected regional competitions, won their regional competitions, made it as state qualifiers and some as a finalist. So how are they "non athletic"? LOL. I'll take this non-athletic team anytime. With the new weight facility and 3 weeks into voluntary strength and conditioning, I think they'll be a tough team to be physical against.
