Highlands 2 Covington Catholic 0

That was funny. You were watching a different game I think. Highlands went into a defensive shell pretty early in the game and it worked for them. The Colonels helped them out with some miscues but I'd be surprised if it works twice in a season. I think CCH has to get used to playing games like that up here and they need to figure it out.

WOW. A good CCH team gets beat, again, by a team in the region and its about the style that is being utilized by the teams "up here". This is why haters hate COVCATH. It's all about the fans attitude. Face it, you got handled last night. Great job Birds! CovCath wake-up call. Hint don't believe everything your fans tell you.

How was the referee? I will let you know later why I ask.

Still smarting over that easy win CCH had over NCC? The style Highlands played had a lot to do with them winning the game so it was a good move by their coaching staff. CCH needs to figure out how to deal with that.

I don't recall the ref being an issue either way in the game.

Not sure why Cov Cath fans are so upset, highlands is a good team.

Losses are not always a bad thing, they are lessons in how to get better. They teach us how to play against different styles of soccer. Some teams play kickball, s one try to possess the ball. What happens on the training grounds next is the real key here, how the team responds is what matters. These games are just practice for the regionals....

Congrats Highlands on a huge win!! I guess this should shake up the top 10 poll.

I agree. Great game plan, and it worked. HHS needed to stay disciplined defensively, and attack when they had the chance. They did both well. Why not let CCH shoot from 30 yards out when you have a quality goalie. That's not CCH's game. Few on the team with enough power to score from there against a good goalie. Those shots just ate time and played into the HHS strategy.

CCH is simply not good enough at this point. Blame really across the board. They need more production from their forwards. Three up top seems like the opposite of the answer for them. Outside they need to make better - quicker decisions. Defensively... well its not hard to score when a good player is allowed to dribble to the edge of the box and take an uncontested shot.

I agree with all of that. I was not making excuses for CCH but saying that tactically they needed to deal with that defensive posture of Highlands a little bit better. Way too much play down the middle of the field and shots from distance. They should have attacked the edges of that defense and played more balls in or made it to the endline and attacked from there. The three forward formation clogged things up I thought.

Agree on both statements... the biggest question might not be how the next NKY poll looks... but how many coaches actually vote.

I think the over/under comes in at 5.5!!!

Don't disagree with that either. I'm more upset with how they dealt with the problem that was posed than losing the game. With only three in the back, they were never able to send the outside backs forward to attack like they do so often. It was a very static/stationary attack I thought.

Poor effort by the Colonels, especially offensively. Highlands had 10 players behind the ball all night, CCH squandered multiple chances to score first in the opening half and just kept jamming it down the middle. CCH played a 3-4-3 the entire night for some reason and it was not effective and really opened them up to counterattacks, while it did nothing for them offensively. I counted 3 shots on goal for Highlands resulting in 2 goals.

I thought they had been going with a 4-4-2, or 4-5-1, why the change to a 3-4-3? It would appear that they thought they could handle the HHS attack with just 3 backs, was this a critical miscue on the part of the coaching staff?

They played the second half of Dixie in a 3-4-3 from what I heard because they were having trouble putting it in the net that game too. I think with the right 3 in the back, yes they could handle the HHS attack without much trouble. I almost think it hindered them more offensively as they had 3 stationary players up top in an already clogged defensive third for HHS. CCH was not able to send players forward with only 3 in back.

Not sure the 3-4-3 hurt CCH as much defensively as it just didn't help offensively. The defensive breakdowns were garden variety small group defensive lapses on a couple of plays. I'd play 4 in the back because it appears to suit the CCH offense better. I'd play Parker Kenny in the back to tighten up ship defensively. Hard to get beat if you keep a clean sheet (excepting, of course, those dreaded PK tie-breakers). As they're playing right now, I think both Scott and Cooper would match up well with CCH and make for great games.

Well, not smarting enough to excuse the better team on that night. Which is what you seem to do whenever the Colonels get beat by a team "up here".

"whenever the Colonels get beat by a team up here" Huh?

That was their second loss and first to a team "up here" so what do you mean that I do that whenever they get beat by someone up here?
