This was a tale of two halves. The first half was controlled more by NCC, getting a goal within the first two minutes of the game. The second goal came about 15 minutes into the game then it was played pretty even for the rest of the half. The second half was Highlands turn to take control and scored on a nice cross/header for the Birds about five minutes into the second half. The next 25 minutes were fairly even with both teams getting changes but not able to convert. The last 10 minutes of the game was a flurry by Highlands and they had several changes to tie the game. The Breds defense held up and held on to a 2 to 1 victory.

 

The game was very clean with no cards and very few whistles. I did not see any "meltdowns" or players losing their temper for Highlands. If both of these teams continue to improve they will make some noise in the region this year. Both have very good talent.

I consider him a decent guy. I was being sarcastic as I think the personal attacks are ridiculous just like the post you deleted.

I deleted the post because after reading your post a couple of times I got your sarcasm. I am a fan of Coach Wiefering as well along with being a friend. I apologize for jumping to conclusions. It was good to see the administration at the game tonight. Of course the gossip hounds and the haters stayed home, kept their mouths shut or stayed outside the fence.

Thanks for the civility Kings. I think we both realize we are still talking about girls soccer and no room for the personal attacks on coaches. In the end the situation at HHS will work itself out.

Who are the gossip hounds and haters and who said they stayed home, kept their mouths shut or stayed outside the fence? Why did the administration have to be there? Where did anyone ever say there were player meltdowns or players losing their temper? You two are absolutely clueless as to what the issues are on this team and in this program and there are way too many to even begin to talk about.

Does having a child at HHS who is also friends with the player that quit after a few games as well as most of the other players count as having a clue?

The score suprises me with the games Highlands worked through this week compared to NCC. Highlands held strong and almost tied it in the second half despite this being an extremely long and physical week. Districts should be great to watch when both teams come in fresh. I would have to go witb Highlands on rested bodies.

Reminds me a little bit of last year. Struggled early in the season but came on strong to make the Regional finals.

The first half belonged to the Newport Central Catholic Lady Breds while the second one belonged to the host Highlands Ladybirds on Friday at Tower Park.

But in this case, NewCath’s better half stood up in a 2-1 36th District win. The Lady Breds stayed undefeated at 8-0 after withstanding a number of Highlands chances to tie the game in the final two minutes.

“The team chemistry is great,” said Kevin Turnick, NewCath Head Coach. “It’s a mixture of seniors through freshmen who contribute. They all get along really well. That’s been a big part of our success these last couple years. It gives you that extra lift.”

Highlands fell to 3-6 on the year with its second loss in as many days. The Ladybirds have dropped five one-goal games this year.

Taylor Tolle scored both NewCath goals. They came in the first half as the Lady Breds took a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

“If you look at the buildups on the goals, they won the battle in the middle in the first half,” said Brian Wiefering, Highlands Head Coach. “We weren’t marking in the middle. Our girls decided they weren’t going to talk to each other so there was always someone open in the middle who was distributing the ball well. Then you have someone like Taylor Tolle who finishes well.”

Tolle scored her first goal just 20 seconds into the game. Senior Loren Zimmerman recorded a long throw-in that Tolle punched into the net.

“In the beginning of the game, it just brings everyone together and shows the intensity from the start of what we can bring to the table,” Zimmerman said. “Everyone can get better at some point. We’re hoping we all come together and get done what we need done.”

That marked career assist number 28 for Zimmerman. She added to the school record for most assists in a career.

“Obviously, I did not do something right because the girls came out flat,” Wiefering said. “The last thing we told them before we took the field was to be ready for the long throw from Loren Zimmerman. They came out and played with heart in the second half. In the first half, I didn’t see it.”

Tolle’s second goal came with about a minute left in the first half. It came on an odd rush after a Highlands turnover.

The Ladybirds scored their only goal just about five minutes into the second half. Taylor Vaughn turned near the out-of-bounds line to the right of the goal and made a nice pass to Kayla Nehus for the score.

Highlands outshot NewCath, 9-5. The Ladybirds even had seven corner kicks to four for the Lady Breds. NewCath goalkeeper Meg Martin had five assists and Highlands goalkeeper Olivia McQueary had two.

“In the first five minutes of the second half, we marked terribly,” Turnick said. “In the last five minutes, we withstood everything they gave us. That was a matter of us not clearing the ball and being able to keep possession. We got lucky at times so that needs to improve and then.”

The game was clean. Neither team received any yellow or red cards.

NewCath plays St. Henry on Monday at 6 p.m. Highlands plays in the Lexington Catholic Invitational starting Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Louisville Assumption.

How bout NewCath? any meltdowns during this titanic battle? Is this a problem and concern this yr for Highlands? meltdowns and temper tantrums for you to refer to Highlands players?

I am trying to figure out what the problem is here at Highlands...

 

Can someone post the starters for Highlands so I can make my own assessment as to why so much parent hating is going on...

 

Has something changed this yr as far as coaching goes? The former coach was less than spectacular as he might want you to think he was...Now he did play the kids that the parents wanted to see on the field so maybe this is the problem this yr...Coach Weifering is most probably playing the best players and is not worried about who mommy and daddy might think they are and how much weight they think they carry with the program. Apparently it is none as Coach W is doing it his way and could care less what the parents think
