Picked Belfry from the beginning. As someone else said, just didnt think a Lexington team could come into the mountains on a late Friday night and beat the Pirates. Better get your signmaker warmed up, I got a feeling he is going to get busy after season!

With the exception of the 1990 team, who opened the season with a 38-7 drubbing of Fort Thomas, I can't remember being more impressed with one of Befry's teams this early. Belfry typically starts a little slow and builds on the fundamentals with the goal being a late season peak in time for the playoffs. Playing this well, this early has me a little puzzled, I don't know what to think about it, lol. This team is still pretty young too. There are only 7 seniors on the team and they are playing a ton of sophomores and a few freshmen. They still have a lot of room for growth. I didn't expect this type of performance from them, especially against the type of team I know Henry Clay can be.

 

This early in the season I don't get too excited about the highs, nor too depressed about the lows. You never know about a team's development and sometimes it takes a few games for everything to get clicking. Yes, Belfry looked really good in controlling the game vs. a bigger 6A school loaded with speed and talent. However, Belfry caught some breaks in this one that aided the final score. HC misplayed a couple of kickoffs and their passing game was not great, which led to a couple of picks by Belfry's secondary.

 

I am afraid the big win, combined with our youth may be a recipe for a mental letdown this coming week. Harlan County is a quality 5A team and they will ground and pound it to match the Pirates. If Belfry is not well prepared, especially mentally, it could lead to an upset on Pond Creek come Friday.

Love the humility Watusi! I think the Belfry squad has it too. Harlan County is good, but I have a feeling if Belfry plays with only a few mstakes that they will leave with a W prettly easily. Just my opinion.

This Friday's game will really show a lot about this Belfry team IMHO.

 

I have the feeling they are about to catch Harlan County's best punch. The Bears got humiliated in their first game and still have that sour taste in their mouth from how last season played out and Belfry was the team that started that spiral. They have went from the toast of the Mountains to a team many people are now second guessing and Friday is the perfect opportunity for them to make a statement and prove Harlan County is going nowhere.

 

I, too, am worried about the fallout from such a dominating performance and I hope it wasn't fools gold. On paper Henry Clay was a Senior laden club with a ton of returning experience and elite athletes... but the fact is they lost probably the best 1/2 backfield combo in Kentucky from last year and they were a team who really showed no semblance of a strong passing game. A lot of that was the fact that Belfry was able to get penetration and took away the deep ball and the QB was very quick to tuck and scramble, but I also didn't see nay HC receivers who demonstrated the ability to run crisp routes or even help their QB.

 

What I do know is Belfry is quick, quick, quick... they have more speed and athleticism than I can ever recall... and their veteran OLine is massive, deep, and impressive.

A great win by Belfry. I have the upmost respect every year for that program and I always love seeing them be successful year in and year out. Best of luck the rest of the way Belfry Pirates and Pond Creek Nation!

They have been ranked #1 from day 1 by most everybody, though, so I'm feeling that a lot of people are believers.
