I would say there are some pretty good refs but there are just as many poor refs. The inconsistency is amazing. So i would assume you're either one of good refs (which would applaud you for that) or your kid is on a very good team that gets some of the best center-judge refs. There are many side judge refs that should not be allowed to be center judges. I don't know how they are paid if center is more but should be and should have different qualifications.

To me the inconsistency, arises more in yellows issued for dissent. Referees personalties vary widely just like players. Some refs or much more thin skinned than other. I've seen yellows issued for not much more than raising an eyebrow on a questionable call with a very confrontational approach. I've seen others more even keeled refs more than willing to talk to the player, tell him what he did wrong and then say, let's go play soccer and don't do it again, Id rather not have give you a red.To say that refs don't have an eye on certain players going into games and are quicker with the card with those players just goes against human nature regardless of how unbiased they are supposed to be.

So it's important that coaches recognize when their players are getting mouthy with the ref or another player and interject themselves. And yes, they're not going to see everything. If you've ever talked to a high school football coach ask them the things they say to the refs. In no way am I saying soccer coaches should act like that.

I heard the tracking of yellows will be done this fall and also the state final was a factor in the decision. Not sure if there will be penalties handed out or if its just to be tracked. I think the powers at be think its mostly a NKY thing and tracking would prove their point.

Soccer refs are the WORST of any sport at playing to the crowd, or conversing with the crowd. Thin skinned is very accurate.

It's understandable that they think it's a N. Ky problem but in reality, last year it was two teams. Unfortunately, it was on full display in the state final as well and I think all of N. Ky was painted w/ the same brush.

Tacking in terms of enforcing new eligibility rules going into affect? They have been keeping track of cards for both individuals as well as teams for some time. I haven't heard nor does the KHSAA website mention and policy/rule change in regards to cumulative yellows amounting to a disqualification. If they do, I hope the consider the rules enforced by UEFA which i believe is a diqualification of one match when either a yellow is issued in 3 consecutive games played in or a 5th occurs. This works for eligibility of individual players but not for team accumulation of yellows. I know the commission monitors all disqualifications pretty closely. But in terms of team punishment I'm not sure what they can do. I believe a saw something on KHSAA's website a few years back when this was mentioned and I believe it stated fines can be charged to the schools and they use the usual terms like "lack of institutional control". No expert on this by any means but I definitely think strong punishments are needed if anything for the safety of the players as well as the trying to keep the matches played in the spirit of the game which is a bit unique to soccer (IMHO).

Some games require one form of control others require another, as do players. Hell some refs get more leeway from players and coaches for unknown factors as well.

 

I'm not disagreeing that we won't always have consistency but let's face it, soccer behavior has not gotten better in the past 5 years, they have to try something.

 

Unless we can make refereeing something where they have an overwhelming number of volunteers then we are stuck with what we have.

They track yellows in MRL and KPL but I don't know if there is any penalties tied to the amount of yellows. Those games are played all over the state so inherently there is some inconsistencies. Players have to play the game the way the game is being called. No different than basketball fouls or a baseball strike zone its part of the human element that is a part of all games. I will tell you sometimes no matter how many cards are given some games are very difficult to keep control of at the older ages.

I have not seen anything in the MRL rules but KPL does have a penalty if you receive 5 yellows in a season.
