I'm not going to point out the reasons that this would be preposterous because it would be impossible to do so without denigrating a player that I LOVED, but I don't think you'd find a lot of support for this stance.

Previous post aside, I think it was huge miss by MLB and Fox.

 

What a great chance they had to honor a great player and educate younger viewers.

 

Seems like MLB misses on this type of chance too often. Fox is certainly to blame as well, but the onus is on MLB.

 

The whole thing with Jeter was totally overdone. All the pregame hype about it was more than enough for me.

 

Had MLB or Fox announced a tribute to Gwynn in pregame, after the fifth inning, during the seventh inning stretch, or anywhere else, I would have made sure to keep tuned in. As it was, I turned on the game when I got an update that a Red was about to hit/pitch.

The joke was always that Jeter was not the best short stop on his own team, that award going to ARod.

Middle infielders were pretty unfairly ignored on lists of great players and certainly by the Hall of Fame for a long time, but the truth is that there just haven't been a whole lot of LEGENDARY shortstops so it's a little easier to make that list. A little tougher to make an all-time outfield.

 

Gwynn was a much better hitter than Jeter and among the best to ever play. Lifetime .338 while batting in for the SAN DIEGO PADRES. Jeter had a little more protection during his career.

 

Great player, don't get me wrong, but let's not compare him to Gwynn and let's not start talking about him as the greatest shortstop ever. He's top five probably, but let's not get crazy.
