July 12, 201412 yr Author May I be forgiven since 1) I don't have a college degree and 2) I can't swim, let alone SCUBA! :eek: As the results show - a lot of people of all educational backgrounds miss that one. But college attendees get the fear of CO2 instilled in them but most still do not even know the primary element in our atmosphere. The Apollo 1 tragedy was so bad since they pumped pure oxygen into the capsule during the mock launch. Pure oxygen is very flammable making that tragedy worse. Certified SCUBA divers better know this answer because SCUBA tanks are filled with ordinary air that is nitrogen rich but they inhale it at the same pressure that matches the depth they are at underwater (1 added atmosphere for every 33 feet) so if they have been down too long or have gone deep the blood gets super saturated with nitrogen and when they return to normal pressure at the surface or less pressure as they ascend to the surface they get the dreaded, and often fatal, bends since the nitrogen comes out of solution and forms bubbles in the blood stream at the lower pressure than what it was inhaled at.
