Best Offensive Lineman in NKY for 2014

Featured Replies

Well this will pretty much wrap up the offensive side of the ball. So lets hear what everyone has to say and again give us more than names please.

Now we're really getting into a tough area to evaluate since 90% of us rarely watch linemen during a game.

I can't pick Sam Murrer of Covington Catholic out of a lineup but his college offers to D1 and D1-AA tell me he must be pretty darn good.

Brandon Johnson of Dixie has to be in the top 5 on both sides of the ball, assuming he is playing both sides of the ball this year.

I understand and agree with what you are saying, but want to be able to give the love to them as well as the skilled positions.

Olmstead, Sandlin and Vercheak for SK.

Agreed. My point is very few can speak intelligently on linemen.

Where is Leatherneck when you need him?

Murrer and Johnson have D1 offers, correct? That would be the place to start due to the reasons mentioned by others as to the lack of knowledge about these unsung warriors.

I'm not sure that is a reasonable barometer of "skill". D1 offers tend to be more a reflection on raw athleticism rather than skill. I've personally seen a lot of 3 and 4 star OL with nearly all the measurables, with multiple offers, but highly unskilled.

Problem is we all have seen tremendous skills in people that won't play past high school, we just have to have a starting point since these positions are not followed by most fans. That's why I think it's the best starting point. Shoot, it's very possible the best OL this year will end up some kid who's 200 lbs of heart.

I'd say OL can only be realistically evaluated as a unit. How many holding calls? How many sacks allowed? Total offensive yardage? QB interceptions? Etc.

Not at all. You just have to know what you're looking for.

Rice at Scott will be a good leader for O-line the next few years. There was also a few kids I saw at SK that were big and quick. I dont know names though.

If you are there to evaluate OL specifically, yes. Most of us are not that sophisticated.

In past years Highland's has been successful with smaller, quicker lineman who were able to reach their secondary blocks. IMO, Mason from Campbell offers quickness while Griffin offers size. Same goes for Hoover, Wieland and Neff at NCC. While all are not physically imposing they do make well timed down field blocks. Newport should have a good unit especially if they decide to let the transfer from Holmes play both ways.
