June 21, 201412 yr Surprised no one has seen this. Facts. Rex Ryan defends Bill Belichick - ESPN Seems like coach speak for Ryan to me...just looks to me as if he is trying to distance himself from the story.

June 21, 201412 yr So you're disregarding the part where they say playbooks change weekly and that they learn more from film than they would by having the opponent's playbook? Nope just saying that it doesn't shock me that Ryan is playing this down, his former assistant seems to have broken an unwritten rule in coaching circles. BTW Pats probably already had practice films of the Jets too!

June 21, 201412 yr Almost all NFL playbooks are virtually the same. Nothing can really be gained from having one. Some of the terminology may be different, but same formations, concepts, blocking schemes. Defensively there is more diversity, but still there would be limited success to be gained from having a playbook as just watching the coaching tape and charting tendencies, calls, etc. If a play book contains a team's terminology, that is a HUGE advantage! Teams use terms readily on the field under the assumption that the other guys don't know what it means. Plus, I would imagine some of the basic adjustments and audibles would be contained in the play book. I wouldn't minimize this. I think it provides a tangible advantage, if true. June 21, 201412 yr Like the Pats need the Jets playbook to beat them. The Jets are awful. They couldn't beat the Pats if they had the NE playbook. Incidentally, Rex is 4-7 vs. the Pats, including playoffs, as the Jets Head Coach. The Pats don't necessarily need the Jets play book to have the Jets number, but the idea that Rex never beats the Pats is not quite accurate.
