The 2014 season of Breds Softball got off to a very bad start with the announcement that the practice facility they had been using for the past 5 seasons, Holy Trinity Jr. High gym, would be available on a very limited basis and no hitting of any kind would be allowed in the gym. Add in the fact that the weather was not conducive to much outdoor practicing and the Breds found themselves in a bad situation.

 

However, the season started of on a very positive note, as freshman Haley Meyers throws a 2-hitter and strikes out 12 in a 3-1 win over Bracken Co. The Breds would go 2-3 over the next 5 games entering the All A tourney. To this point in the season they had already missed 11 games due to weather, including the Pete Noll tourney (4 games) and Rockcastle Co. tourney (3 games).

 

The Breds would win 4 straight to capture the 9th Region All A title and then win the next 4, taking an 11-3 record into the All A State tourney. The Breds would go 2-2 in the tourney, winning big against Burgin & Trinity-Whitesville, but then being on the receiving end of 2 butt-whoopins' by Lou. Holy Cross & Livingston Central.

 

The Breds would go 4-4 over their next 8 going into the District tourney tasting defeat in a few that should have gone in the "W" column, but "drama" reared it's ugly head.

 

NewCath would face Newport in the semi-finals of the 36th District, and come away with a 7-2 victory setting up a date with Highlands. Breds freshman pitcher Haley Meyers throws one hell of a game allowing only two-hits, but takes the lose in a 2-1 defeat as the Birds win the district for the 1st time since 2011.

 

In the 1st round of the 9th Region tourney, Meyers throws the best game of the season, as she allows just one hit and fans 9 Conner Cougars in a 2-0 setback. The Breds finish 18-11.

 

Coach Denny Barnes returns 8 starters for the 2015 season, lost to graduation are Taylor Burkart and Molly Mertle.
