Out with the old, and in with the new. There will be a lot of new talent hitting the field this year not just at Qbs but other positions as well. If you have to compare to make you feel better, then go ahead. I think some of these new faces will surprise us all.

Jeff Martin - Hudl

 

 

It will be interesting to see who gets the QB job and how Coach Trosper and Coach Delph change the offense. Do they run more? What passes do they bring in and what passes do they take out?

 

From the film, arm strength is an issue. For the last three years Conner threw a lot of passes out wide to the WR. That's a long pass that needs zip. I didn't see that zip in the Hudl film. Looks like a solid athlete. Needs to get physically stronger.

New seasons always bring comparisons. It's been that way forever. Unfortunately, whomever wins the QB job at Conner has to follow a high D1 kid. Never going to live up to that. We need to measure with a different ruler.

If I'm QB one kid I'm definitely looking for next season is Michael Postel. Good size kid at WR. Nice-looking athlete. Had some success last year.

That is the one big thing I saw in the one JV game I saw him play last year. It's impossible to compare him to Barker because they are in a different universe athletically (as are most high school QB's compared to Barker).

I don't think the Conner coaches have handed the reins over to Martin just yet. There's no doubting his athleticism. The concern I've heard from several coaches is his ability, or lack thereof so far, to grasp the playbook and read the defense. Obviously, those things will hopefully improve over time as he gains experience, but again, I don't think the starting QB position has been "guaranteed" to him by any stretch.

You're right, you can't compare Martin with Barker. Barker had all the great players surrounding him. It's easy to look good when you have a line that blocks and receivers that can catch just about everything you throw to them. Most of the time he had plenty of time to get the ball off as for Martin, he had the total opposite always running for his life cause no-one blocked and his receivers would catch the ball 1of 3 times when thrown to them. Everyone knows the JV team is the last thought, they get all the hitting dummies in practice. The varsity players think it's a slap in the face if they have to play down. So yes you're right you can't compare them. The coach would never play Barker down and you really don't know how good Martin is cause he never got to play with those surroundings.

Not discounting Barker in anyway the kid went D-1 for a reason, but it's unfair to compare a QB from JV only play to a QB that was strictly Varsity from day 1.

And yes Barker had some talented players around him, but he did some things, fitting balls into tight spaces, and making throws only a handful of kids can make. And Barker was very good when things broke down, making a lot plays on the run, which happened quite a bit. It's not fair to compare anyone to a D1 level quarterback. But it is what it is...while Martin may be capable, he just doesn't have close to the skill set that Barker has. That's not a knock on Martin. But the two aren't in the same universe, and as a result, Conner will have to change the way they've done things over the last few years.

Be careful here. Schools didn't offer Drew because he had a great line and his receivers caught every pass and he had all day to throw. Let the Martin kid just be him. He's not going to be Drew and that's not a shot at the kid. Drew is a once-in-a-lifetime Conner QB. Get away from comparing the two because you'll either look bad or put the Martin boy in a bad spot.

 

Let's let Martin compete for the job and if he wins then we Conner fans will hope he does what he can do to the best of his abilities. We're not going to expect him to be #7.

What's not unfair is watching the tape you put up and evaluating the arm. Has nothing to do with the catch or the blocking.

Never would have expected Barker to play down, just stating that in no way can you compare the two, they played with players that were on totally different levels, just hope that Martin gets a chance to show what he is capable of, I have complete faith in coach Trosper and firmly believe the Cougars will have a great year.
