The Dirty Birds beat Ryle for the second time in 2 days..

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team recorded its second comeback win over the defending 9th Region champions in consecutive days.

Highlands (17-15) fell behind 6-0 before rallying Monday. The Bluebirds trailed 4-0 before coming back Tuesday to beat the Ryle Raiders, 7-5 in Union.

Evan Allen picked up the pitching win for Highlands. He relieved starter Jacob Noe in the sixth inning.

Highlands outhit Ryle, 14-8. D.J. Mills led the way going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Grayson Heck, Mitch Gesenhues and Alex Veneman had two hits each. Veneman had a double, two RBI and a run scored with Gesenhues scoring once.

Highlands travels to Covington Catholic on Thursday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Nice 2 day stretch for the Birds. They were without JR Whitford for both games and without JR Hennigan yesterday, but battled back after trailing early in each game. S/O to JR Noe on a solid pitching outing and to SR Allen for closing the door on a rally in the 6th and getting a DP to end the game.

 

In case you were wondering, the suicide squeeze was again critical in pushing across a run in the 7th. High risk, high reward.

That's production from the bottom of the lineup, Pow! Over came a 6 run and 4 run deficits back to back, no panic. Nice play.

SR Allen is showing good leadership as the Birds approach districts (lead off triple in the top of the 7th Monday, closed out the game in relief yesterday). Another game where the Birds kept chipping away until they were able to get key hits in the late innings. Suicide squeeze by JR Veneman was clutch.

 

Although Ryle may have a losing record this season, don't be fooled by their record. SR Mason Forbes is a big time player and others have pop in their bats. Starting pitcher SO Jake Ziegelmeyer threw well, relieved by SR Tom Deters and JR Max Lonnemann. JR Catcher Marshall Rich had a key hit to tie the game in the 6th inning after HHS had taken a 5-4 lead. They have 13 seniors (it was their Sr. night yesterday) and are solid up and down the lineup. And from the small glimpse we got to see of their ace (SR Josh Bellew) who pitched in relief in the 7th inning, they will be a tough out for Conner next Tuesday in the 33rd district semifinals.
