Meade County 2014

Featured Replies

What does Meade County need to do to improve in 2014? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

Obviously we can not replace a Tim Mattingly. With that being said life goes on. Everybody thought it was the end of the world when Larry French left but Coach Mofield exceeded expectations. Meade will stick to physical, fundamentally sound football and will be okay. Coach Mofield does an excellent job. The Central Hardin match will be tougher I'm sure but Meade will win football games. Just like we always do.. Underrated and off the radar the way we like it.

Meade was good before coach Mattingly and they will be fine without him. Coach Mo knows what it takes to win ball games and the Greenwave will be good as usual. I am not sure they can match what they did last year, that was a special group, but no doubt Meade Co. will continue as Meade Co. always does. Good luck!

"Obviously we can not replace a Tim Mattingly. With that being said life goes on." I agree with Dark horse 78. Coach Mattingly is a very good defensive coach and a even better man. The world will not end, Meade still has some very good and experienced coaches that know football. Coach Mofield and his group will have Meade ready!!!! The jury is out weather Coach Mattingly will succeed as a Head Coach. We wish him and his family all the luck. I believe it takes a special coach to be a head coach, especially like Coach Mofield. Not everyone has the ability to lead..most have the ability to follow. The one bust on Coach Mattingly is his defensive scheme is out dated. Yes last year was very good but there were many reasons and contributors. Meade's schedule, lots of team speed, experience (Seniors that started multiple years), to include great team play. Meade also had a very good offense (Led by John Wilson, Joah and Sunshine). Not to mention Coach Scott, Coach Wilson, Coach kirk, and Coach Frank should also be given credit for the defensive success of last year. I personally believe Meade would have beat Scott Co handily if the defensive scheme was more aggressive in certain situations, just my opinion we needed to use more blitzes, stunts, and edge rushing in that game. Meade had very few sacks as a unit last year, hopefully that will be a weakness the new DC addresses. As far as Central Hardin, I dont think Coach Mattingly will make a difference in the outcome, Meade will still win!!! But they will be a better defensive unit for sure.

I guess you should let Chuck Smith and Larry French know as well that there 44 defense is outdated.... I believe it has won them a few games

Please quit listening to people who have no idea what they are talking about.

Meades defense carried them last year like it always does. It is not out dated. Period

That's why Mattingly has had top 10 defense's year in and year out. He won us more games than I can count. If you ask me he runs the most fundamentally sound defensive scheme in the area.

If I remember correctly, Meade held us to our lowest point total of the year, and one of our touchdowns was on a fake punt. Even two years ago they played us really tough so I would have to say his system works very well.

To my point about Meade's Defense. The question was how Meade can improve. In my opinion a more aggressive style of defense. I understand you must have a good interior DL and speed at the OLB position to let DE rush off the edge. That being said this question is not just about Meade. Many HS programs run this style of conservative containment defense. It works especially well when you play the teams (Meade and other top public school programs typically play from year to year)(minus JH and in the past Ballard, Manual, Fern Creek, Male), they are not exactly offensive powerhouses. Meade probably could not win in the super district with this defense on a regular basis, too much speed and talent at the RB and QB positions. To be successful you should learn from those teams being successful year after year.

My comment wasn’t a referendum on Coach Mattingly (He is a great coach) or Meade (A great football program), but the defensive scheme in general. Darkhorse78 is spot on; last year’s team was special and achieved something only achieved one other time. “Just my opinion Meade needed to use more blitzes, stunts, and edge rushing in that game. Meade had very few sacks as a unit last year, hopefully that will be a weakness the new DC addresses.” I still believe Meade beats Scott handily with more pressure.

I don't know how many of you watch the top HS programs in the country play games on ESPN, to include Trinity & X. The High School game is trending towards the college game. Speed & quickness at the DE and LB position is the name of the game. College teams are recruiting taller, lighter, and quicker DEs to put pressure on QBs. SLB that run 4.5 in the forty. There are only 2 top nationally ranked teams in KY (Trinity & X) they both have aggressive style college defenses. True they recruit the top talent, and are the odds on favorites every year to win the 6A championship.

If you want to see the future of HS football, go to a regional Rivals or Nike camp. The DEs & LBs are big, fast, and physical and get after the QB. We always complain about "why aren't KY kids getting more top D-1 offers". Two reasons, we are not developing D-1 players and we don't have enough 7on 7 clubs (By the way elite 7on7 does a great job) or off season training facilities (such as Core6 & IMG or 360). Look at volleyball, this area is a hotbed of D-1 talent. Why they develop D-1 talent through club play and invest in cutting edge athletic training (Like Edge Performance).

Yes hoss403, Meade played very well against JH this past year, however I don't think JH was the same JH we are used to seeing, not to mention I’ve also seen scores of JH-55 Meade 13. Iam4thecats, defense did not carry Meade last year. Meade played great as a team, had great coaching and played great in all phases of the game (Offense, Defense & Special Teams), Meade Pride, I agree Coach Mattingly’s defense is fundamentally sound and have won Meade a lot of games. But how many of those wins were against (Male, JH, Fern Creek, Ballard, Greenwood, Henderson Co, St X or Trinity). The point is the HS game is evolving; players are more athletic, faster, bigger and stronger. Yes, the defense works in Meade’s district, but the district frankly is not that competitive. Meade needs and can win against stiffer competition. As to “Coach Mofield exceeded expectations” I do believe he coached on the 91 state runner-up team as well.

Yes GOEagles! the 44 still works. You can still put pressure on the QB using the 44 defense. The point I was making was not about the 44, but really the containment style of defense.

You are Meade county. You have one of the top defensive schemes in the state of Kentucky. It wins. It fits your personnel. Chuck smith won 5 rings with it. Larry French won 2 rings with it. Meade has 2 runner -ups with it. It's fans like you who think they know something that is ruining high school athletics and driving coaches out of the game.

First of all, this is a blog to discuss opinions and nothing more. Iamthecats, you have your opionion I have mine. What makes you think you know so much. You stated the Defense carried Meade last year, that is totally wrong. Not to mention what a stupid comment " It's fans like you who think they know something that is ruining high school athletics and driving coaches out of the game." How am I ruining HS athletics and driving coaches out of the game??? I wish I had that much power to influence on such a grand scheme. Scott Co didn't run that defense, they won the championship. What makes you think you know more than anybody else!!!! state your opinion, don't get personel!!!

This thread is turning quite contentious but I will say this, Meade definitely had the personnel last year that they have not had in the past. I think up until last year they were around a .500 team, maybe a little better the last several years. Looks like they had a very good senior class last year. For what it's worth Justafan, I think this upcoming season may see Meade beat John Hardin for the first time in several years.

Meade had the #2 ranked defense in Kentucky last year. They had the #31 ranked offense. The defense carried that team and that program and always will as long as Mofield is there.

hoss403, IDK Meade and JH is always a hard hitting game and a joy to watch. JH is a hell of a program. Would be nice to win this year in death valley. It wasn't just the senior class, the team was deep at a lot of positions. But Meade did lose a lot in this senior class.
