In high school the runner has to make a legal slide on a force play. In order for it to be legal he must go directly into the bag but NOT go over or past the bag and make contact with the defender. In this case, the runner went in to the side of the bag and made contact. By rule, automatic double play.

 

So, I'm curious as to what the Boone fans, coaches, and players were upset with that caused them to somehow be "inspired."

 

Boone was upset because it was a HORRIBLE call! The shortstop actually came across the bag and initiated the contact with the sliding runner when he was trying to dig the ball out of the dirt form the first basemans throw. The ball ended up in left field. It was an error on the first baseman and both runners were safe and should have remained on the bases. The reason it was called obstruction is because the umpire in the field was horrible and probably doesn't know anything about the actual rule and/or it's intent. It's unfortunate that the contact happened and that the Cooper player was injured but it was a clean slide and nothing more. If the first baseman would have made a decent throw to his teammate the entire scenario would not have happened and it would have been a routine force out.

Couldn't agree more. There were some Boone fans and Boone parents who were just outright embarrassing. Never heard more whining from a kindergarten class who just got their juice boxes taken away. Very embarrassing and they showed zero class. It was a shame. The coach making a comment of "Show me the cleat marks" was also way out of line especially while the kid was laying on the ground hurt. Totally classless. You want to see cleat marks? Cooper's catcher still has them from Friday Nights game against Boone.

 

Totally classless by some Boone supporters and it was very embarrassing.

 

Now about the game itself. Great pitchers duel. Both starters only gave up 1 hit going into the 5th inning. Ganns was on top of his game. it was a 1-1 game going into the 5th when things got ugly. Errors allowed 3 runs for Boone and that is all they needed. Congrats to the Rebels for a big win in a district seeding game.

I find this rather funny.. Did the runner slide through the bag?? Your argument is only about the umpire and your feelings about him personally, sounds like you may be an umpire also. If not, I hear that HS baseball is always in need of umpires.

 

Unless you have strapped it on and either walked on a field or court and had to stand there and listen to fans yell at you not stop for 2 hours, I think the guys in blue would rather you just say "Thank You for all the hard work you put in for little pay"

 

Another thing to think about. Next time you have the feeling to yell at either the grown man calling strikes in a HS game, or a 10 year old calling strikes in a knothole game, please let them know where you work and your cell number so they can call you and tell you how bad you are at your job for 2 hours a day so you can see how it feels.

Correct. The throw from first hit the dirt about 2 feet in front of second base which was behind the runner that was sliding and the SS tried to come over/through the slidding runner, that's how the contact occured. The runner did slide directly into the bag.

Thanks. What we have here is traditional. You saw it one way. They saw it a different way and the umpire saw it his way. The ump got the rule right based on what he saw.

You are correct on everything you have listed. It's just kind of funny that both umpires on the field tried to expalin it as the runner slid to hard and across the base into the fielder initiating unnecessary contact when in fact the SS came into him. I'm not sure why they automatically assumed that the only way there could have been contact was because of the runner sliding. The runner has as much right to the bag as the fielder. Again, the whole thing would have never occured had the first baseman made a decent throw and not hung his teammate out to dry.

But I also understand losing is a part of life and hopefully a lesson. Supposed to make us stronger. I also understand that the people officiating high school games are going to make mistakes. But I'm telling you after spending my entire life playing, coaching, watching, and hopefully enjoying sports, the parents (not all) are the issue! The envirnoment is so different, this sense of entitlement is unreal. The fact that parents are not only yelling at the umps but cussing at the top of their lungs is a DISGRACE! Last time I checked and I don't know the man personally, Boone's coach is a very good coach and can handle the umps all by himself. He doesn't need parents screaming stupid crap! I'm pretty sure he can and would handle it. Getting ejected from a high school baseball game as a parent, come on people! Have some respect for your school, your team, yourself, but more importantly your son/daughter playing the game! I was at a JV game last week and two dads on the opposing team were right next to their dugout, challenging each other to a fight within earshot of the players! Are you kidding me?! Then last night fans yelling non-stop. Chanting KNOTHOLE! This is ********! Hey UMP get your head out of your ***! Are you kidding me people? Slapping the ump on the back after the game? Totally agree and I've seen it happen 1st hand between two kids. When the parents become a liability coaches will pick someone else.

After sitting through two games in the span of 5 days along side the Cooper fan base I'll take the Rebel fan base over Cooper a million times over. The conduct of the Cooper fan base at these two games was completely obnoxious as well. We just don't send continuous threads to BGP about it. The other big difference is that the Rebel fans are much more knowledgeable about the game and thus very passionate about the game. Between you and Hellbird you spend alot of time trashing the Rebel fans when maybe you should be worrying about your own fan base. I have six words for you and hellbird "Hello pot this is the kettle".

Bottom line is that it was a great battle. Lost in this is 2 kids, that are very good, respect each other and are good friends giving it all they had. We got to see a battle of 2 kids going to play D1 baseball. How often do we even get the chance to see that. I have the utmost respect for Mr. T Ganns and Mr. H Dunn. It was worth the price of admission to see these 2 battle it out. They left in on the field and that's all you can ask for.
