WOW. When did the starters get pulled?

Starters were pulled early in the 3rd qtr. South had around 90 on the board at that time.

They pulled the five starters midway through the third quarter and went with Goodin, Marcum, Hamm, Conley and #24 until sometime in the 4th quarter when they emptied the bench.

 

South Laurel scored 75 points in the first half, but I'm not sure why they were still pressing when they were up by 50+ points.

Why did South continue to press the entire game. I listen to some of it on the radio and they said they were still pressing in the 4th quarter. I'm suprised that W'burg scored as much as they did.

Not sure why they were still pressing either, I guess Wright taught Haynes a lession, to bad for the kids from Williamsburg. So I guess the no mercy rumor was true. :irked:

He beat the crap out of a bunch of 8th and 9th graders, Wburg did not ask for SL to be placed in the 50th district. They have been there for 70 years.

I would think that Wright's decision to not pull the starters until the 3rd quarter, and to press almost the entire game, would have more to do with Wright trying to get his players prepared for the tougher district and region games, later on in the post-season, then it would have to do with teaching W'burg some lesson.

 

Lots of coaches nowadays are all about resting players for the big games and letting them take meaningless games off, but we saw where that got the Indianapolis Colts this season and last.

 

I think Wright is trying to send a message to his players that no game can be taken lightly and they better be ready to play more then a 1/2 of ball. He doesnt want this "we are IT" attitude that has permeated the team throughout the season continuing into the district and region tourneys.

 

It does SL no good to have there starters play a quarter or 1/2 of ball. Let alone to play that 1 quarter or 1/2 not giving it 110%. This is the district tourney, and taking the night off (whether that means resting your starters or telling them to "take it easy") isnt in SL's best interest, irregardless of how young or inexperienced W'burg is.

My hat is off to the Williamsburg kids who played hard the entire game. They were just physically manhandled by an older, bigger and stronger team that seemed intent on trying to prove some kind of point, though I have no idea what it was.

Haynes deserved this and deserved it twice as much but the kids of Williamsburg didn't deserve this. I lost all respect for Coach Haynes when he basically said that they were not good enough. Boo Hoo Coach, get over it and let the kids play. Sure they may get beat by 68 points but at least they got their chance to try and prove people wrong. I hope that the new coach (hopefully) tells the kids that he believes in them.

 

On the flip side, South is talented from top to bottom. While their bench may not be a top 10 caliber (YET), they are more than likely better than Williamsburg at the moment. They bust their tails day in and day out, morning in and morning out, and all times in between during practice. They run til they drop in the summer, fall, ect. They deserved their chance to play. I would have lost respect for Steve Wright if he denied them their right to give their all. I haven't been a fan of Coach Wright simply due to him being South's coach and me being from Corbin am not supposed to like South. However, I respect the heck out of him. You don't preach 100% to the players all year long only to tell them, not to play hard even if it is an inferior opponent.

 

I don't think the pressing late in the game is the right thing to do but we all do things we wish we hadn't done once we look back. Congrats to South and hopefully the Hounds will take care of business against Whitley so we can meet up.

 

Congrats to the Williamsburg kids on sticking with it through a very down year. I hope they do not get discouraged from this and bounce back next season with a mission to prove people wrong. They deserve it. Good Luck Jackets.

The Williamsburg kids did play hard, better times are just 2 or 3 years away. Things will change at the Burg. :sssh:
