Great performance by Connor Maddox. Good luck to both teams at the Regional.

8 times I believe. 1926, 1928, 1936, 1964, 1977, 1982, 2013, 2014.

To add a little more detail: 1926 was before "districts" and "regionals" were established. There were 18 areas of the state...each of which had a "sectional" to determine who went to state. And Augusta won its sectional...losing a first round state tournament game to Winchester in double overtime 21-19.

In 1928, Augusta was district runner-up.

The other six checked out. Sorry; didn't take the time to see if there were any more district titles.

To respond to another comment, my boss once told me 15 teams go home from the state tournament thinking they got the short end of the stick. Only 1 was happy. No doubt that same situation exists in the district and region tournaments too. Been there; felt that way myself.

If you looked on that website with all the tournaments, the 1928 score is incorrect I believe.

I Gotta Go To Work is correct on the others district titles.

Augusta's last regional tournament win was in 1950 with a win over Carlisle.

Interesting fact: during the mid 40s only District winners advanced to the regional tournament.

Congratulations to both teams. Nice accomplishment, that both teams have made it to the district championship game back to back years.

Good luck to both teams in the regional tourney.

Both teams with outstanding young players, that should continue to make it interesting when these two teams hook up over the next few years.

Thanks for the note, AHS. I have asked my "super checker" to verify that 1928 score/winner.

Since there was no district tournament in 1926; and since Augusta won the only tournament necessary to advance to the state tournament that year; you could say they "won the region." I'll have those tournament scores posted in the next week or two.

During the World War II years of 1943-45, there were twice as many districts...and, as you said, only district winners advanced to the region. Still 8 teams at region, but they were trying to cut down on travel as much as possible to save fuel/energy consumption.

Just talked to our main "digger," and his reply, "The official Board of Control Minutes from the attached meeting shows Minerva as the (1928) District Champion."

I scrolled through the PDF file and it lists Minerva, a class B school, the winner. In two different places.

It did not list the score, but newspaper files showed the 30-20 mark...a Minerva win over Augusta (as shown on the website) to be correct.

Good stuff and thanks for all the info! :thumb:

The part of the above comment about a "Class B" school brings up something lots of folks don't know: we used to have class basketball in Kentucky.

I didn't think it was a well officiated game, but I don't think it was awful either. It had little bearing regardless. The better team won tonight.

Connor Maddox was the story of the night with his perimeter shooting. He got hot & that's really important for Augusta as they move on to the Regionals. Bach didn't score like he normally does, but it was evident that he was looking to get others involved. And I thought Camryn Snapp did some nice things, even though he fouled out in the 4th quarter.

Austin Crawford played really well. He's so gifted at getting to the basket & at utilizing his off hand in doing so. Jacob Hamilton also had a nice game. The Polar Bears have those two kids for three more years, but they certainly don't play like freshmen. It was good to see Scott Fite get some time tonight. He grabbed a few boards & got a basket or two. Hopefully he'll be able to play a little more in the Region next week. Steven Cummins also played some good D. He was on Bach most of the night.

Outstanding crowd tonight & another memorable 39th District Tournament is in the books.

As much as I always look forward to the regional tourney, I'm already missing the excitement from the Igloo this week.

Interesting. If I'm not mistaken there's a banner hanging in the Augusta gym that has those two years listed. Very strange is so. But I could be completely wrong.

Great 2nd half last night!! It was exciting to watch these teams battle! Is the Crawford kid from Bracken really a freshman?!

He is.

He's got some good genes. Older brother Grant was a solid player in basketball (maybe baseball too) & graduated last year. Older sister Jaclyn started for 2 or 3 years on the Lady Bears team & also did very well in softball.

His Dad & at least one uncle are/were good athletes.

I'll check again. There are six of us around the state who spend a huge hunk of time trying to get the history "just right." Hundreds of hours online and at libraries everywhere...including Louisville, Lexington and U.K. However, our main digger is also a coach whose team is in the thick of the tournaments...not sure how much time he will have to verify right now, but I'll try.

Thanks for the info that you have. Not surprising that Augusta has a banner for 1926. The tournament they won was a biggie...to go to state.

The more I think about it, the more I like this 1928 possibility: Kentucky schools were divided into two classes at the time: Class A (bigger schools) and Class B (smaller schools.) The district, region, and state were divided so that in each stage of the tournament, all the A schools played to determine a winner...and the B schools did the same. Then the "champions" from each class played for the overall title. Since Minerva was the district "B" champion and Augusta was the district "A" champion in 1928, it might have been natural for both to have a "championship banner."

AHS, you asked about Augusta history. All I have is on that website...Augusta's tourney scores starting with the first year of district and region tournaments: 1927. My goal is always to get season records and coaches names too, but I have precious little in that department that goes that far back.
