Having a turf field in NKY provides an advantage in spring football?

Featured Replies

Last year all 9 starters were football players.

This year, for next years 9-12, it will be in upwards of 15.

Which for the record, they'll dress about 50 total next year and 40 of them...yes, 40 of them will be freshmen and sophomores.

That is a lot of shared players. But, given the number of young players, I think Spring Football would be that much more important, giving those young players a head start on fall. Big upside.

Spring practice has been more like a linemen camp the last two years, which has been good...fun times. :)

Hey, I see that as a positive, how much time during the season is spent on developing OL/DL? Using the Spring for lineman development may be the best thing for that school.

I say it's an excuse because their are ways to work around it: alternating times for baseball and football practice, scheduling the 10 practices on days there are not baseball games, and the football coach working with the baseball and track coaches to make it happen.

As for numbers: half line drills, individual drills, just being around the game will make improvement. I don't care if it's 10 players, just work on footwork, hand work, and position specific stuff. Those 10 players will get better because of that time.

If getting better at football is a priority to the coaching staff, school and players, spring football should be a priority. Not having it for any reason, is an excuse in my book.

You listed as alternating practice times yet a lot of schools won't allow a player to practice with one if he is still playing the other sport. Which btw I agree with 100%. Why totally burn the kid out?

That would be fine if that is a rule, why not have Spring Football just for the players that are not practicing or playing another sport. My point remains the same, there is no reason to not work on football during the Spring Football Practice period.

Well how about if you have less than 20 players not playing a Spring Sport and you really don't have a field to practice on?

The less then 20 players is an excuse. The not having a field to practice on is a very bad excuse.

Listen everyone, if you or your school doesn't want to have football, that is fine, don't have it. But, making excuses to not have football activity is wrong. I would respect a coach for saying "I don't want to devote the extra time to Spring Football" but "not having a field" is just an excuse.

Newport Central Catholic has less than 20 players and no field to practice on. They do not have Spring practice. Guess it saves their legs for all those State Finals they play in when December rolls around.

There's no land in the area?

And, the 18 players don't deserve to get some work in, in the spring?

I agree and Cooper does do that. I was just saying that some schools dnt allow players to do both at the same time, which I personally agree with because it's. OT fair to the kids for one or the coaches of the teams for another. You're stretching the kids too thn.

Their practice field is falling over a hill and can't be used during Spring or they would not have it even be semi-useful during the Fall. 18 Frosh/Sophs/Jrs not involved in another activity might be stretching the number upward but what do you want them to do? Those players will continue on with their lifting and conditioning like they have been.

I would say you would be hard pressed to find any small schools in NKY that have Spring Football like a Highlands or some of the 6A schools are able to have.

My point is, if you can't, or don't want to, use Spring Practice as an evaluation period, at minimum it should be used to get a lot of reps for the young players. It's an opportunity to get better.

Love spring football. You get a chance to evaluate kids in a different way because often times the guys who will end up starting were backups the year before. Its great.

As for turf, its obviously an advantage IMO.
