Some random thoughts:

 

I'm still not sold on Lincoln County at #11.

 

I lobbied hard for Doss last week following a 4 point win over DeSales and a 20 point win over an underrated (at least in my mind) Iroquois team. I was not worried about the Waggener loss because all indications are that they have a solid club. Doss repaid me by only beating a 9-17 Fairdale team by 10 on the road, but that first glance might not tell the whole story. Fairdale has played an insanely tough schedule and has beaten E-town, Johnson Central, and Bullitt East. Some of their losses include: Trinity by 10, Manual by 9, PRP by 7, St. X by 2 in OT, and Eastern by 8.

 

I think that Dixie Heights would beat some of the teams on this list despite having what many describe as an off-night against Cov Cath.

 

The 11th Region has beaten one another to death. The only two teams you can strongly justify rankings for are up there. Others are as good as some teams on here on a given night, but don't bring it as consistently as you'd like.

JW24 has it right. "I think that Dixie Heights would beat some of the teams on this list despite having what many describe as an off-night against Cov Cath." They had to sit around from 1:30pm for bus ride till game time so the team could play on bad weather . Not an excuse but a lot of down time over normal routine. CCH game only.

I agree with your Top 5, except that Newport Central Catholic should be #2.

If Hopkinsville gets healthy they will show you number 1

Lex Cath has lost 4 of their last 5 and it could run to 5 of their last 6.

I think Lincoln County is the type of team who'll really struggle if they get down to State and have to match up with some really athletic teams, so to me, that puts a cap on their value.

 

I just have a hard time accepting that there aren't 12 or so teams in the State who are better.

That's fair, but remember that the Dunbar thrashing was when they were without Dontell Brown. Dunbar didn't really start to turn the corner until about a month later when they beat Bryan Station.

 

I don't think they are bad, I just don't know about them being that high.

 

Here's a rough view of my top 25. Outside of the top 7, I think that a lot of the teams are a toss-up given match-ups and how anyone is playing on a given night. For the teams on the same tier, I ranked them alphabetically.

Tier 2:

 

Doss:

One of the best in Louisville. May be better than PRP and has the ability to beat teams that I don't see Lincoln Co. being able to beat (at least as consistently).

 

KCC:

Justice, Hall, Christon core with the addition of Keegan Simmons. Have a star, have experience, and seem to be playing really well this year.

 

PCC:

People are wanting to throw out the baby with the bathwater over the KCC loss, but they started the game with a Tech, I think they got another, and had some key kids in foul trouble... this is a PCC team that only lost to Scott County by 8 as well.

 

PRP:

Mabrey leading McDaniel and Harris when they're hot is a scary thought. They're good enough to beat Ballard but inconsistent enough to lost to teams they shouldn't, otherwise they'd be higher.

 

Wayne County:

A really good team of highly skilled kids. I just don't know if they're good enough offensively to make up for both their lack of size and the way that they'll struggle to defend the teams above them.

 

 

 

Tier 3:

 

Cordia:

Lost to NCC and KCC in a three day span, otherwise, they've been pretty good.

 

Dixie Heights:

I don't want to throw them by the wayside after one bad game against Cov Cath.

 

Elizabethtown:

Male-Trinity-Bardstown-Warren Central in such a short span and back-and-forth on the road would be tough for anyone.

 

Hazard:

Give them a team they match up with well, and they are dangerous. Hudson is a GAM. All of their losses are to very good teams.

 

Holmes:

Still very athletic and have Beetle Bolden and Quinton Chames. They've had Feb-Funks in the past.

 

Lincoln Co.:

Taylor and Conway, some and a really solid record, but still lost to Wayne County by 11 early; biggest win is Doss (when they came to the 12th), best loss is an early 2 point decision to Lexington Catholic; the MoCo loss isn't a good luck now. Have beaten Bryan Station, Taylor County, and a fledging Lexington Catholic team in Lex.

 

Warren Central:

Methinks it would be quite unwise to sleep on the Dragons. They haven't had great health most of the year, but that may not be the case now. Porter-Bunton is a stud.

 

 

Tier 4:

 

Collins:

I don't know if they've played the kind of schedule that will prepare them for the kind of teams they'll have to consistently beat once at state. Wins over Male, Bullitt East, Harrison County, and Eastern are good in and of themselves, but it'd have been nice to see them get that signature win that they're lacking right now if you want to bump them up.

 

Eastern:

Methinks Henley has this team improving everyday and they're possibly still going to get better. They'll be a really tough out for someone in the 7th.

 

Montgomery County:

A senior night loss when emotions were running high and Bryan Station shot like their lives depended on it has them dropping hard, but maybe it was just one of those nights where Station could do no wrong and the Indians could do no right. Biggest wins are Wayne County, Lincoln County, and Lawrence County, but all of those came at home. Madison Central is young and beating the Indians in Berea was early in the year. Their best road win might be beating Henderson County at Bourbon County.

 

St. Xavier:

They've weathered a tough Louisville schedule well. If the Eastern and DuPont Manual losses are by far their worst, which they are (the others came to Ballard, Trinity, PRP, and Covington Catholic), you aren't too bad. They've not beaten a top-notch opponent though, as Male, DeSales, Rowan County, West Jesssamine and Western are solid wins, but certainly not wins over teams rated ahead of them in this list.

 

Tier 5:

 

Fleming County:

OT loss to Lewis County was their fourth game in as many days. I still think they're the team to beat in the 16th, and are probably still getting better as Burns gets back to his old self.

 

Taylor County:

A great unknown. Quinten Goodin is a stud. They've lost 4 games this year, two to out of state teams, one to Lincoln County in Lexington and the other to Cordia by 1. The in-state losses were early. The problem is, we don't really know how good they are because they haven't played teams that many are very familiar with. Their best wins are Elizabethtown and Russell County. They have a huge test coming up with Hopkinsville, and that could be telling of just how good they are.

Have you seen Taylor Co. play,,I have seen them both a couple of times,,like Etown the best..

 

I have seen each play once. Etown looked better, but I think I may have seen their best game of the year. Taylor Co has a head to head win. I think you can go either way on the two, and I'd be fine with either one at 20.

The bottom of a poll like this is always the most difficult to figure out.

Lincoln deserves to be with your tier 2 teams. I would put Montgomery Co and probably Collins with your tier 3.

I would drop Dixie a tier, and Fleming Co doesn't have the results to be ranked.

What the heck does that mean? Let's be real, there are only about 15 of the 20 on this list with no shot at the title. Heck, all of those are capped.
