I don't think anyone has because of all the classes, it may be the most uncertain. Speculation has been rampant that at least one team will play up and some are of the opinion a few will to avoid Highlands. It's even been speculated that Highlands and CovCath may play up. In the west, Calloway County and Hopkins County Central are on an island, so even though I think it's unlikely, it's even possible that they will play up. Just too much unknown yet for someone to go through the meticulous process of guessing.

As if we needed another reason to go back to 4 classes or 5, this Calloway/Hopkins Central fiasco proves it.

 

You said it...on an island...it's ridiculous how far they will have to go for district games, especially Calloway. Still, though, If I'm Calloway I'm not playing up...travel or not. Think they will?

I'm thinking the same thing on Calloway. They almost have to play up.

 

I'm also of the belief that classes should be stable except for cases of extreme geographic hardship. The district alignment should have been released and any geographic outliers should have then had an appeals process. This idea of playing up and dropping down just seems like an over-complication of the process.

If 5 teams elect to move up to 5A, there would be a district with Calloway, Hop Central, Madisonville, and Hoptown. Probably a long shot but, logistically this just makes sense.

This is true for certain if five teams play up and all five elect to play down. But the question I still haven't seen answered is what if Doss, for example, decided they didn't want to play down? As the smallest of the current 5A teams, does that mean that no team above them is given the same option? Or does it continue up the line anyway? So five teams play up, five teams are given the option, and if two of them don't take it the other three are allowed anyway? The KHSAA has always taken a stance against having a team in a lower class that is larger than an upper class team that is playing in their aligned class (i.e. In this scenario Doss stays in 5A, their properly aligned class, but Hopkinsville, a larger team, is allowed to play down to 4A).

I think Calloway and Hopkins County Central are likely to stay put just simply to avoid the unbelievable beatdowns that await them if they move up. It's a bad situation they're in, given the choice between a long trip or being completely noncompetitive in a higher district. It is possible to come up with a slightly workable situation in that if they were paired with (for example) Franklin-Simpson and AC/S, you set it up so that neither of the extreme sides ever has to go on the road to both the long distance travel teams in the same year. So it could be set up that Calloway County hosts Hopkins County Central and Franklin-Simpson one year, traveling to AC/S, then the next year it flips, they travel to Hopkins County Central (relatively closer) and Franklin-Simpson, but host AC/S.

 

You and I are on the same page as far as their allowances to play up class. I think what they're doing now makes sense in theory, but several teams tried to game the system in the past, and I think will do so again, creating a volatile situation.

Being from one of the two schools in discussion. I feel at this time there is no way either team even dreams about playing up in 5A. Central is on a two year losing streak. So there is no desire there to move up. Calloway has struggled lately also; both teams are trying to rebuild programs that were competitive in years past. I don't know the answer, but from Central to FS is over an hour and to ACS its an hour and a half. Breck County is a possibility?
