5A Possible Alignment

So is Covington Catholic not being considered for 5A now?

If you've covered this alot, I apologize.

No worries.

Had they used a two year enrollment model like they had the past several alignments, Covington Catholic would be in 5A. Because the KHSAA opted for a four year model instead, it left Covington Catholic as the second largest school in 4A. They had 87 more males in their last class compared to the first year that is being used for these numbers. (10/11). So unless Covington Catholic opts to play up - which if they did you would figure would bring Highlands too - then no, CovCath will not be in 5A.

Thanks D Fire! Always great info!

When do teams have to decide to play up or stay put?

How do you feel about Warren Central moving to 4A?

Maybe too much for here, but know you are staunch supporter.

I believe these teams have another week to declare their intent. The KHSAA release said that they must make it known by close of business day on Friday, February 21st. I'm hoping that they let us know who is moving prior to their release of the draft alignment in April.

I have mixed feelings about the move to 4A. On the one hand, if they hadn't been trapped with Bowling Green (and to a lesser extent Christian County), I think there's a chance they may have won four straight region titles in 4A. I would've considered it a mortal lock that they would have at least one. They defeated the 4A region champ by 3 or more TDs both in 2011 and 2013. So getting away from BG may benefit them in that respect - or may not, who knows. But I did always feel that in 5A if they could get by region, they could win the whole thing. Yes, John Hardin would've been a tough out in the past (and maybe WC wouldn't have ever gotten past that), but they also won't be there now (unless of course they play up). In 4A, I'm not certain that'll be true. While their chances of advancing further drastically increase, they'd still have teams like John Hardin or Collins outside of the region before they run into the 400 lb gorilla Highlands in the finals. Basically the juggernaut just moves in when they'd see them.

One other benefit of 4A for Warren Central is that as their enrollment drops further and further, at least they'll be on a more even ground with the teams they face most of the time. I'm not certain there's any team they'd see before the finals that dresses 99 like Bowling Green does.

I have absolute confidence WC would still play BG, but I would consider it a negative of the move if this caused them to stop playing. But I 100% see that never happening.

DFire that Feb 21st date sounds pretty significant. I guess we'll have alot to talk about once we know how that actually will play out.

I agree with your WC assessment. Good 4A teams as you mentioned are out there just not in the next city block over. PurpleNation and I spoke some time ago that we think WC would have won State at least 1 or 2 times during BGs recent run because the onlygames they lost were to BG.

I definitely dont want them to stop playing, but like conference realignment in college sports nothing seems permanent anymore.
