Time for a Shot Clock in HS Basketball.....

Featured Replies

....when a team starts holding the ball with 3:40 left in the game. That's the only way the visiting team could stop Madison Central's comeback tonight. Sad.:isurrender:

How is not playing basketball during a basketball game sad ? Really ?

Give me some details. Winning team had the ball. What was MC doing?

Why do you think college and NBA have a shot clock? To advance the game. No one is interested in watching a game that isn't a game.

So you're not going to answer the question? Why didn't MC come out and try to steal the ball? There's no rule that says they can't play aggressive D and steal the ball.

They did and forced a few turnovers. You seem to be missing the point. If you ever notice people will get up and go to the bathroom or concession stand during halftime. That's because no one wants to stare at the floor with "no basketball being played". People attend basketball games to watch basketball being played. Again this started at the 3:40 mark. And again.... it is time for a shot clock in HS basketball.

Or start fouling. You have to do something if you are behind. If you let them hold the ball, then shame on you. There is no shot clock, like it or not, do something.

Now as a fan, I would like to see one, but not because of the case you just described, just to move the game along. No shot clock does give the underdog an advantage, if they can handle the ball and control the game. Not everyone will play the game as we want.

Don't blame the loss on the lack of a shot clock. Didn't hurt them one bit last year.

I disagree on the shot clock. It's strategy. If MC isn't good enough to force the ball out of the other team's hands that's on them.

If you were that upset why didn't you leave? You also didn't mention the Trinity beat you without their best player.

When my team is the one behind I hate teams that hold the ball, yet when my team is ahead and starts holding the ball I'm fine with it.

Frankly, I think it adds something to the high school game and usually you have to have a pretty decent team to hold the ball if your opponent is any good at all. if your players are capable of pressuring your opponents into a mistake or hurried shot then it probably is a very close game that could be won by anybody.

And BTW, I wasn't aware they began playing athletics in school systems to entertain whatever fans might be watching them. I was under the impression that it was to foster good sportsmanship and provide a type of physical exercise (go back & look it up). I think the NCAA & NBA started the idea that is necessary that we "entertain the fans" (or TV Viewers) all due to $$$. I could give a flying hoot about whether the NCAA, the NBA or ever any state high school athletic association implemented a shot clock to help them make money.

Funny thing is I STILL hear some coaches call out to their players "North Carolina" when they want them to pull the ball out into something resembling Dean Smith's "four corner's" stall offense he made infamous at North Carolina. For being such a great HOF coach, Coach Smith certainly got a ton of infamy from having developed & refined the four corners stall.

Even if a shot clock were a good idea in high school ball (and I don't believe it is) you would have a hard time finding enough qualified folks to run it. It's tough enough...in a lot of places...to find folks who can run the clock, the scoreboard, and keep the official book.

I watched a game tonight that was a very close game. Even went into overtime; there was more than one possession where each team ran their offense and didn't get the shot they wanted. The play didn't produce a good look. Both teams backed it back out and ran another play until they got the shot they wanted. They didn't force a bad shot. The shot clock produces bad shots. Yes execution is what you want but everybody knows that if you want a good shot, make the other team play defense. Make them move and guard someone. A shot clock in high school is a bad idea; period.

The 3 pt. line has already changed the game,,,,Please no shot clock, leave the game as it is. It is a high school sport, where TV does not rule,,,,,,Yet

On the no shot clock rule side, you will never convince me if MC was up 5 points with a minute-twenty on the clock. They would be coached to shoot it in 35 seconds. They would love (or any team would love) to play keep away and run out the clock. I wasn't there, but it sounds like Szabo felt that slowing it down and making them foul or play defense was the right choice, especially with an all-stater sidelined.

Although, as I stated earlier, I would favor the shot clock, but it is not high on my wish list. I have seen many great games without it and I would expect that to continue.
