April 24, 201412 yr I can't say enough about this band "Vetiver". They were an accidental discovery on my part about 5 years ago which lead me to be lucky enough to catch them live a couple of times at the old Southgate House in Newport. They're masters at laid back, lazy day, happy hippy reflective acoustic folk. Their releases "To Find Me Gone" & "Tight Knit" are exceptional. In total they have about 5 releases with "Errant Charm" being their most recent which I still need to give a spin. This song "Everyday" from Tight Knit is probably their most upbeat happy poppy number which is more immediate to the listener, but there's a great reward with chillin' back with just about anything you can get your hands on. Tune after tune on their releases work well together as a cohesive unit to keep you in a relaxed laid back peaceful mood.
April 24, 201412 yr Ivan & Alyosha have a knack for writing nice Beatlesque tunes and harmonize nicely live. Caught them in the small parlour at the Southgate House a couple of years ago and their voices filled the room and gave goose bumps.
April 24, 201412 yr Zach Condon from Beirut sings great live (sort like a crooner), and also plays a mean horn too. A live horn can really be moving. As a teenager he split from his home town of Sante Fe, New Mexico and ran around Europe falling in love with street Balkan music and came home to base his band Beirut on that whole premise, and has now released 3 exceptional albums, and has toured the world time and again. They bring an amazing sound live like nothing you've ever heard before. They really make accordions and trumpets come to life in a very cool way. Zach really doesn't sport a stache, it's just fake for the video.
April 24, 201412 yr Without a doubt this next one will likely be a challenge. Joanna Newsom is an accomplished harpist with a childlike voice. This may be extremely strange at first listen, but this tune has a way of getting in your head in a freaky way and mess with your emotions. Getting through her releases can be a chore since her voice and writing style are not in the least typical. I've fallen in love with her first release the Milk-Eyed Mender once I was able to find the vibe for what she was doing. Her second release is 2 discs, and her 3rd release is 3 discs and was way too much for me to settle in to. I did catch her live once at the MusicNow Festival at Memorial Hall in Cincy and she did not disappoint giving one of the most unusual shows that i've ever seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDGeFBjynyY
April 24, 201412 yr In the spirit of keeping things freaky: I caught this chick Anomie Bell last September at an EDM show at the MadFrod in Cincy. She was her own DJ. One solid night of grooviness with 4 different acts spinning knobs, and impromtu artists doing there thing in every corner of the room, and on the patio. There were people painting psychedelic paintings to the music and fire eaters and whatnot, and glow in the dark hoo-la-hoops spinning all night to the wild trancy techno music. The grooviness never paused, and although a packed house, the kids in attendance were all very peaceful and respective of one another. It was very cool seeing everyone play nice with each other and keeping the vibe a happy one.
April 24, 201412 yr David Eugene Edwards of "16 Horsepower" from Denver is a committed Christian and everything he writes or sings is dedicated to the Lord. He's one intense dude to see live. After numerous 16 Horsepower releases he went on to form the band "Wovenhand" keeping very much the same spirit of 16 HP alive. There are heavy elements of Bluegrass Folk in his music, and very much an infectious intensity in his approach. Although deep rooted in American mountain sounds, his audience in large part are mostly Europeans. I can't say enough about how intense and unique 16 HP are and how their music can get deep into your soul.
