Dead period question?

Featured Replies

Question regarding dead period. It's come to my attention that dead period is now three weeks. Can anyone give me the dates for this summer? If it is three weeks, I can see this affecting quote a few summer teams that have HS coaches that coach those teams. This could knock out a third or more of a season if that's the case for those coaches.

June 25-July 9 according to KHSAA. Still the same

Thanks for the updates

I thought this thread was going to be about relationship advice.

Extra week aside...this makes no sense for fastpitch and baseball coaches to be included in a dead period that directly affects the outside coaching interests. The time frame that is set is timed perfectly for fall coaches (soccer, volleyball, football) but it directly conflicts with spring sports coaches (baseball, fastpitch, track, golf, tennis).

I dont disagree with having a dead period just that it doesnt coincide with each sport's coaches. My suggestion is to keep the dates now for fall coaches. Move the winter sports coaches to the fall and the spring sports coaches to the winter. Just my opinion. I have been wrong before and will be again.

Let the bashing begin.

I agree. Fastpitch in this state is behind a lot of other states. I would like to see more high school leagues in the summer that don't interfere with AAU.

The KHSAA is taking a short cut in having only one dead period covering all sports.

I couldn't agree more. Baseball and softball are affected more than any other sports. There are really only 6 or 7 weekends in the summer from June 1 to July 15 for these two sports before the high school fall sports season begins practicing. Now they are taking 3 of these weekends away from coaches. This is rediculous and makes no sense at all IMO.

The kids can still play baseball and softball during the dead period just not for their school.

Understood. However if I understand the rule correctly no high school coach at any level can coach during this time, even if it is a parent that helps out with the high school team in any way. I believe some baseball/softball teams choose not to play during this time or they have an assistant or try to find a parent to coach that is not associated or helps out with a high school team. Seems like it just makes things a little more difficult to be a coach.

We had this conversation awhile back and we did get bashed for saying it hurt softball and baseball more.

Those dates are the same times as Boulder, Independence and Sparkler in CO July 4th week. Almost every coach at every level goes to CO to try and find players. If you have a good HS coach just say Bloomer, Coach P, RCC9 etc and they are coaching your team in the summer you are more than likely not going. Yes you could have someone else coach your team but that's not likely.

Those aren't the only tourney's that it affects just probably the biggest and most well known.
