It was a "special day" for the couple. Both took off work. Caught the matinee so they could make it back to pick up their daughter.

I believe I read there were only about 25 people in the theater at the time, so there likely were lots of open seats. The logical choice would have been to relocate to another seat where the brightness of the phone wouldn't have been a problem.

From my own experience, bright screens in the row in front of me have been a problem at the Aronoff Center and at high school musicals. I know the Aronoff runs a tight ship. If an usher sees a lit-up screen after the warning is made before the performance begins, the patron is told to turn the device off pronto.
