January 16, 201412 yr Stayed at Myrtle so many times it's not funny... I prefer North Myrtle for sure, PP92 enjoy your retirement there it should be great.
January 16, 201412 yr We've enjoyed: Ft. Walton, Clearwater, and Siesta Key beaches on the Florida Gulf Coast. Indiatlantic and Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic side for waves. All are fair priced and aren't crowd crazy. Ft. Walton is the most quite and laid back, Clearwater would be the busiest ( you'll see a lot of europeans ). The wife and I really enjoy Charleston SC for the history, architecture, landscape, and food ( we like a Bed and Breakfast there ). My kids really enjoy the Outer Banks of NC ( especially for the surf, me included ). Outer Banks can be as remote as you'd like and provide a lot of vacation home choices ( book at least 8-12 months in advance, if you like what you see on the internet, most others will to ). Some have mentioned the great lakes and I agree. Lake Michigan coast is convenient, affordable, and can be a lot of fun. I've been as far up as Leland ( has the best fudge I've ever eaten ), north of Traverse City, Sleeping Bear dunes, and Michigan City IN ( we actually were able to bogey board on a windy day ). Just point your beach chairs away from the power station stack :thumb:. Water temp in August will vary from 60-70s. I'd recommend a wetsuit for Memorial Day weekend. Enjoy, wherever you end up!
January 16, 201412 yr I was very spoiled at a young age. In Mexico, I lived 15 minutes from Progreso, a public beach/Port city. There were a bunch of seafood restaurant/Bar type places there. They also had numerous night clubs near there. It is due south of New Orleans on the Yucatan Peninsula. We were about a 3 hour drive to the Maya Riviera (LOVE Playa del Carmen) and those beaches. So, for me, it is difficult to be a huge fan of American beaches due to the fact that the water is murky. Southern Florida is just too expensive for me to enjoy as I am a tight wad.
January 16, 201412 yr Depends on what you are looking for. I'm retiring at North Myrtle Beach. #hater I 2nd that. Mom and dad had a place at North Myrtle, I enjoyed it immensely. Yes, Myrtle beach can get crowded at the peak tourist times, but the NMB area is great, lots to do, plenty of places to eat, golf galore which is right up my alley.
