Lafayette 91 Scott County 86 (OT)

Featured Replies

Final from the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic High School.

Lafayette will play Newport Central Catholic in a semifinal game tomorrow night at 6 p.m. ET.

Scott County will play PRP in the consolation bracket at 3 p.m. ET.

What a game of runs. Lafayette jumped out 15-0 early, but Jackson Davis then picked up 2 quick fouls and Trent Gilbert, who hadn't scored until Davis went to the bench, got going.

Lafayette overcame a huge 2nd quarter by the Cardinals, who went on a 39-14 run in the second half. The Generals could have been in much better shape if they'd have valued possession of the ball in the second half, as their cutting into the lead only came when playing the "foul game" and using offensive/defensive substitutions.

Trent Gilbert led Scott County with 44 points. Jackson Davis led Lafayette with 34 points.

Harrison Lane hits a shot from half court to send it to overtime and give Lafayette all the momentum in the process, as they never led in the second half and his shot was the only tie of the half.

Lafayette had an 81-80 lead in overtime and then carelessly turned it over with around 2:00 remaining. The teams then traded turnovers. Lafayette's Jackson Davis then sank a pair of free throws to push the lead out to 83-80. Trent Gilbert then missed a shot that led to a Davis cleaning up a General's miss on the other end to push the lead out to 87-82. Lafayette then fouled, putting Seth Crank at the line where he made both to cut the lead to 87-84. The teams then traded turnovers (quite a theme in the 2nd half) before Lafayette took a timeout with around :30 remaining.

From there, a near turnover from Lafayette that had some fans coming out of their seats and the announcers scratching their heads came on a deflection tipped into the backcourt where some wanted an over and back called against Lafayette. The whistle was not blown, however, and Scott County fouled Harrison Lane. He made both to push it out to 89-84. From there, Trent Gilbert was fouled, and being Mr. Automatic from the line, he made both to cut it to 89-86. Freshman Jujuante Carpenter would then ice the game with 2 free throws, giving us the 91-86 margin we saw.

What a game, what a finish.

Harrison Lane and Lucky Jackson had 18 apiece to help Lafayette.

That was a great game to watch in person. Davis and Gilbert worth the price of admission.

I'm still pissed about how both teams played at the end of the 4th(Long kept shooting) and in OT....turnover, turnover, dumb foul, turnover, turnover, shooting with the lead, turnover, dumb foul....

It's maddening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See-saw game with some incredible moments.

Some turning points that stuck out to me.

1. Lafayette's 15-0 run to blitz Scott County right out of the gate.

2. Scott County ending the first half on a 39-14 run. The biggest portion of that run was defined by a 14-3 Cardinal's advantage from the midway point of the second quarter.

3. Jackson Davis' block of a Scott County lay-up early in the 4th quarter. Davis flew in out of nowhere to pin the shot, and Lafayette got out in transition, taking the ball the other way for a score. That play was basically a 4 point swing when Lafayette looked dead in the water. If the layup was made, they'd have been down 10 points, but instead, found themselves only down 6.

4. Tony Martini and Matt Murray fouling out in the 4th quarter for the Cardinals.

5. Lafayette freshman Javarious Robinson making two free throws to cut the lead to 1.

6. Lafayette's Ross Jenkins catching a pass at half court with 3 seconds left in regulation and getting the ball to Harrison Lane, who hit a half courter on the move to tie the ballgame as time expired in regulation.

7. Jujuante Carpenter getting to the line in overtime and making a free throw to strike first.

8. Jackson Davis sinking a pair of free throws, then scoring on a put back off of a SC turnover, in succession, to give Lafayette the lead.

9. The officials drawing the ire of Cardinal fans when they did not call an over and back on a pass they ruled as tipped or deflected into the backcourt that Lafayette recovered, which, in essence, forced Scott County to foul and put Harrison Lane on the line. It was a bang-bang play and the ball appeared to have been tipped and the right call made, but it was one that will be scrutinized (more-so than it already has been).

10. Who else, but freshman Jujuante Carpenter, icing the game with a pair of free throws to give us the final margin.

I'm so mad I am going to go home and watch two college teams that should be good play some bad basketball now......

Yep. It definitely wasn't pretty. I think the fatigue factor from both teams pressing and having played late last night began to show in this one, that's for sure.

Anyone going to hold it against me if I pick this one as my game of the week for the 11th Region Notebook that's coming out tomorrow?

You left out the biggest turning point in the game.....Lane from 35 feet to send it to OT and Lafayette's only tie of the second half.........

#6.

It didn't look like a tipped pass to me. I thought he just threw it away, which would have been normal since both teams did nothing but foul and turn it over at inopportune times in OT.

Hard to tell on the computer screen though.

I see it now. I gave the Cliff Notes version of it.

Agree. I thought they made the call they did because a Scott County player touched the ball after it crossed over the half court line, and it was only after that had occurred when Lafayette touched it/reestablished possession. It was a bang-bang play though and one the ref was right in front of, which leads me to believe they got it right. Like you said though, hard to tell what happened watching on a computer screen.

Looking forward to seeing Jackson Davis v Newcath tomorrow night
