PT Head Coach Randy Wyatt Resigns

Featured Replies

Amid heavy pressure, PT Coach Randy Wyatt has resigned. Many felt that Wyatt was underachieving, not just this year but every year in his 6 years as coach. He won one state title in 2009 but even that year the Tornado struggled. He never beat Mayfield and PT is currently suffering through the longest loosing streak in the series by either side. The fan base had dwindled the last couple of years to the point that crowds were always larger for the visitors even at home and even in the playoffs. After the loss to Wayne County fans began a campaign to oust Wyatt.

He didn't take no crap and some didn't buy into that. I thought he did a decent job. PT could be a great job.

The way he handled the events around losing defensive coordinator Shanks the Sunday before the Wayne County game and then the Tilghman defense being so unorganized was a big blow that cost him alot of his supporters. He took the no crap thing to far and I don't blame Shanks for walking out. The this is my team I am the man thing went over the top.

Could be the best thing PT could do or could back fire miserably.

Just as much as I can see PT getting the right guy who can develop the tremendous athletes Tilghman is blessed with... I could see a mass exodus of players both already at Tilghman...or about to attend Tilghman... to the newer, hotter McCracken County School with their wide open offense.

What were the EVENTS surrounding Shanks departure? Why did he leave?

After six years as head coach at Paducah Tilghman, Randy Wyatt has resigned. Wyatt told us tonight it was simply time to turn the program over. Wyatt called this a tough decision, but said it was 110% his decision.

Wyatt led Tilghman to a 48-30 record in his six seasons as head coach, including three trips to the state semifinals and the 2009 KHSAA 3A state championship.

The Tilghman alum said there was no particular reason he was leaving, but that sometimes you just know it's time to move on.

"This program helped raise me," Wyatt said by telephone Tuesday night. "Walking away from the program that helped raise me is very difficult."

Calls to Paducah Tilghman principal Art Davis were not returned, so there is not word yet on what direction the coaching search will take.

Wyatt says he will remain on as track coach at Paducah Tilghman

Anyone favored for the job?

Not that I have heard but it is early and this decision was a suprise to all. Wyatt always had the support of Prinicpal and AD even the last couple of years when there was alot of negative talk among the faithful and most all expected that to remain and no changes occurr. After the loss to Wayne though parents began organizing openly and planned meetings with votes for or against. Still no one I talked to believed it sould sway the Adm. A parent that I ran into the other day, one that use to support Wyatt, proclaimed that Wyatt ran the football program more along the lines of a prison and also referenced that he disbanded the boster club a year or so ago after they voiced concerns with the direction of the program.

I didn't know he was at PT. I saw him play for PT. They had some great athletes back then. I was actually involved with setting up games they had with Brentwood Academy. Those were some great games.

From the Paducah Sun

Wyatt had a great career at Paducah Tilghman and it led to him being inducted into the KHSAA Hall Of Fame in 2012 for being a 15 time state champion in track and field, where he never lost an event at the state level. In football he was all state and his senior year he was listed as one of the top 100 football players in the nation. He quarterbacked Tilghman to 3 straight state championship appearances from 1987-89. As Tilghman's track coach he has won 9 state championships.

I remember him winning 100 meter dash as an eighth grader. He may not have run track his senior year...not sure.

Tilghman was probably the fastest high school team I've ever seen. Woodfork...Wyatt...Tremaine Donald...Billy Jack Haskins...Plillips...Kurt Barber could all fly.
