Why Does the Cold Give Peyton Manning Such Trouble?

Featured Replies

As a Peyton Manning fantasy football owner, last night's game was awful hard to watch. Not so much do to the play of Manning, but the play calling. But that's from my selfish standpoint, it was certainly working for them.

Not sure I agree with the last statement. Manning is 1-6 since 2003 in games below freezing. Brady, in that same time frame, is 23-5 in those conditions.

I lean towards the fact that Manning is much more of a feel and touch passer than guys like Brady, Rodgers, Brees, etc. When it's cold, that touch and feel is much harder to get IMO.

I said Brady manages it much better and that is what you said affirmed by your numbers :D To rephrase, there is a dip in production from all QBs in poor conditions. Some let the cold get to them more than others though.

To answer the original question: Because he's old and has had a bunch of surgeries.

Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller on Sirius NFL "Moving the Chains" were discussing this today. They both said the cold and wind are factors, but that also hand size played into it. I am not sure where these gys rate on that. Brady seemed to handle it a lot better than Manning last night. Manning seemed to get nothing on some throws but he also drilled a couple. I wonder if he was strucggling with the grip due to hand size.

He struggles with his grip in the cold because his ring and pinky finger go numb, a by-product of the neck surgery similar to what occasionally happens to me as a result of the pinched nerve in my neck, compounded by mild carpal tunnel. That's why he spent half the night shaking his right hand to get feeling in those two digits.

That might have been more of a factor.
