Double-threat Latimore hopes to carry Walton-Verona to final

 

For Walton-Verona multi-purpose senior Chris Latimore, it's not all about yards and carries, as he and junior backfield mate Mason Compton share the running load in the Bearcats' offensive attack.

 

It's about wins and pancakes.

 

Latimore is hoping there's more of both at 7 p.m. Friday at Newport Stadium in the Bearcats' Class 2A second-round playoff showdown against defending state champion Newport Central Catholic.

 

"On offense, we have to be close to perfect on the first drive, get those pancakes, and set the tone," said Latimore, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound bruiser. "On defense, we have to show our guts and keep it contained, and fill in those holes."

 

With Latimore doubling as halfback on offense and the roaming inside linebacker on defense, the Bearcats believe that they have a chance to flatten the Thoroughbreds.

 

Walton-Verona (9-2) has won three games in a row, and six of the last seven. The Thoroughbreds (7-4) have won six straight. It's a rematch of last year's regional final, won 49-14 by NewCath. The winner earns a return trip to the final, against either Carroll County or Gallatin County.

 

Bearcats coach Jeff Barth said it's going to take a lot of Latimore to lower the boom on the 'Breds.

 

"He leads us in total yards, tackles and scoring," Barth said. "He's a big reason why we're 9-2 and getting another shot at NCC, and we expect a big night from him and Mason and all our guys. What I don't have to worry about is them complaining about carries."

 

With 171 yards on 32 carries in last week's first-round win against Lloyd, Compton played the bell-cow back and went over 1,000 for the season. He's up to 1,064 on 5.9 per carry.

 

Latimore, with 844 yards on a robust 8.6 per carry, needs 156 for 1,000. He has amassed a team-high 1,206 total yards, including 239 receiving, second on the team, and 123 on returns. He also leads the team with 19 touchdowns, extending his Walton-Verona career record total to 33. One of them was a school-record 90-yard kickoff return for a score during the regular season.

 

"When we're in the backfield, we don't compete for yards," Latimore said of the friendly competition with Compton. "Mason and I compete for who can block the hardest, and we compete for pancakes for the other person. If one of us can block a defender on his back, that's good for the other guy. As far as who leads us in pancakes, that'd be me right now. He's a little behind."

 

Latimore's team-first approach is one of many things endearing him to teammates and coaches.

 

"He's a two-way player most of the night, and he doesn't get too many breaks, though we try to spell him a bit," Barth said of his rock. "Chris is a great leader because he's vocal, and he leads by the way he plays. We have a few others like that, too, but Chris is very important to what we do."

 

NewCath surrendered minus-15 rushing yards last week in a 47-14 win against Owen County.

 

"We're a running team, and we have our work cut out for us. But we haven't been treating this as the final weekend at the water cooler," Barth said. "It's a big-time football game for us that we want to win. To get to NCC's level, you have to beat them, and we feel like we haven't played our best game yet. Hopefully, that's Friday night."
