What are your feelings about club volleyball? Do you think that the club teams help to develop your daughter? Do you feel as though paying for individual instruction would be better?

I understand that playing competitive games can help a young person develop better; however, sometimes I wonder if all this club stuff is just a money grab.

Anyone have any feelings on this? High School coaches, feel free to respond, I would love to hear your opinions.

I think you have to look at the club leadership and the coaches. Stability, track record, and the players they are producing. Just playing club doesn't make you better. It has to be the right club, the right fit for your daughters' talent level and her goals, and the right fit for what u are willing to commit to.

And if you are thinking about the upcoming season, you have probably missed all of the tryouts already.

I agree & will add that unless your kid plays for NDA or another powerhouse vball team, club is where most college scouting is!! Most scout only Open Elite teams but not limited. My friend's granddaughter received interests from a 16-2s team that played at Nationals so it is possible!! I believe most colleges probably spend more time scouting at club tourneys than at school tourneys!!

You must play club as well as give up any sport you enjoy.

No different than AAU basketball, club soccer, travel softball, club swimming, I can go on and on.

I don't know which one would be better. How about which one would be more enjoyable for the player....if they had to choose? Playing games with peers or getting individual instruction?

False when it comes to school teams. Volleyball is worst offender. AAU hoops is bigger in spring/summer, not interfering with volleyball or soccer. Softball interferes with no one. God forbid you want to play for your school hoops team. Club vball nazis won't permit it.

That depends on the club you play for so not entirely true. Also, I have had numerous players miss volleyball in the summer due to AAU basketball & Travel softball. You have to be willing to work with kids.

There are clubs still holding tryouts & extending invites but many are limited, but if you check the club sites in the area there are still clubs looking for players.

If you are a good volleyball player with college potential, college coaches will find out about you whether you play club year round or not. It is unfair to the kid to brainwash them in to thinking that they have to play when they might enjoy playing other sports in high school as well.

Not real concerned with college. I understand that only the cream rises; I just want to have her prepared to make her high school team.

That's really, really bad advice. Please give an example of someone who never played club ball and got a scholarship. I would bet 1% of all the volleyball players getting scholarships yearly play only HS. It's actually the complete opposite. You need to play club but not HS to get seen by coaches. If u are a top recruit or already on someone's radar, then maybe, maybe a coach will come see you in HS. But they would have already seen you in club first.

Club volleyball is not just a money grab. I will say not all clubs (and coaches within the same club) are equal. Nearly every varsity player on the court will be playing club. And those freshman and sophomores that expect to make an impact will as well. Coaches can only do so much in 6 weeks —time from tryouts to 1st game— so if they are starting at ground zero, it's simply too much to ask of any coach. Good luck!
