The playoffs are getting closer as district play heats up with key match ups each week. Let’s take a look back at the week 6 action and who stood out.

Beechwood 56 Bellevue 22

The red and white Tigers flexed their muscles with a balanced offensive attack, racking up 219 yards on the ground and 193 yard through the air, as they improved to 1-0 in district play and more importantly wrapped up the district #1 seed, barring a major upset one of the next two weeks. Sophomore Ethan Stringer led Beechwood with 147 yards and 4 TD’s on just 14 carries. The play of the game came in the first quarter, however, from Max Shover who had a 99 yard interception return for a touchdown. Tyler Ackerson was the one bright spot for Bellevue, finishing 23-38 for 250 yards, while also breaking the school pass completion record.

Campbell County 16 Dixie Heights 13

In what was most likely a battle for second place in the district and a home playoff game, it was the Camels who pulled out the win with a 45 yard punt return for a touchdown by Eli Matthews with 5:43 left to play. Avery Wood led the Camels offense with 179 total yards. Jake Zabonick was virtually unstoppable out wide, finishing with 131 yards and a touchdown on 11 catches. Dixie outgained Campbell County 310-218 but a missed field goal late in the game ended up sealing the win for Campbell County to improve their record to 1-1 in the district and stop Dixie’s 5 game win streak.

Conner 55 Holy Cross 21

It was another Drew Barker show as the senior finished 17 for 26 passing for 279 yards and 7 touchdowns to help improve Conner’s record to 5-2. Andrew Way (113 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Ryan Romey (106 yards, 2 touchdowns) both finished with over 100 yards receiving, as Conner racked up 500 yards of total offense. Jalen Beal was once again the go to man for Holy Cross finishing with 95 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while also returning a kick 97 yards for a touchdown.

Holmes 14 Harrison County 7

The Bulldogs picked up a big district win to guarantee they won’t be travelling to the one seed when the playoffs start. Holmes managed just 28 yards passing, but piled up 313 yards on the ground, which was more than Harrison County’s total yardage for the game (300 yards). Senior Jon Scruggs finished with 182 yards rushing on 31 carries, while also catching a 57 yards touchdown pass to give him 61 total receiving yards. Holmes improves to 5-2 on the season.

Lloyd 33 Bishop Brossart 7

Lloyd improves to 5-3 with another district win. Quarterback Hayden Moliter passed for 200 yards and three touchdowns, with one of those touchdowns being an 80 yard touchdown strike to junior Zack Riddle (2 catches, 102 yards. Running back Jared Gabbard had another solid week with 122 total yards and a touchdown on 20 touches

Ludlow 46 Dayton 0

The Panthers picked up a big district win to improve their record to 3-4 and will now have a chance at securing a home playoff game if they can win this week against Bellevue. Ludlow has now won 3 consecutive games.

Newport Catholic 42 Newport 21

After a slow start, the Breds pulled away in the second half to improve their record to 3-4 and firmly put themselves in the drivers seat for yet another district championship and #1 seed in the playoffs. Mac Franzen finished 9 of 14 for 176 yards and four touchdowns with Tommy Donnelly getting 107 of those yards and 3 touchdowns.

Scott 49 Grant County 12

Coach Dan Woolley’s Eagles continue to improve on their best season in school history as they are now 7-0. Scott finished with 343 yards rushing with sophomore Roberto London carrying the load with 173 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13 carries. Nick Brinkman (5 rushes, 87 yards), Dylen DeTatta , Ben Osborne, and Chris Roberts all reached the end zone for a touchdown. Scott is now in first place in the district with the next two weeks determining how their playoff picture will play out.

South Oldham 31 Cooper 20

The Jags fell to 2-6, dropping their 5th straight game. Cooper had a touchdown lead heading in to the 4th quarter but the Dragons scored 18 unanswered points to get the win over Coach Borchers’ squad. . Will Ludwig passed for 294 yards and two touchdowns on 20 of 42 passing, with Cory Fussinger catching 10 of those passes for 181 yards and both touchdowns.

Covington Catholic 26 Ryle 17

The Raiders led 17-0 heading in to the 4th quarter but couldn’t hold on as the Colonels scored the game’s final 26 points to improve to 5-2. Ben Dressman finished 17 of 32 for 187 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 76 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Ben’s brother, Sam, finished with 17 carries for 79 yards and four catches for 39 yards. Logan McDowell and Sam Hatter were the other two Colonels to reach in the end zone in the win.

Simon Kenton 55 Boone County 7

It was another dominating performance for the Pioneers as they improved their record to 8-0. Brenan Kuntz completed 10 of 14 passes for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also rushing for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns on 11 carries. Kuntz completed a pass to 7 different receivers with Grant Wassom being his favorite target (4 catches, 68 yards). Kyle Heflin finished with 72 yards and 2 touchdowns on 5 carries for the Pioneers. The Simon Kenton defense takes home player of the game award, however, as they held the Boone offense to just 128 total yards.

NKY Top 10 10/14

1. Highlands (7-0)

2. Simon Kenton (8-0)

3. Covington Catholic (5-2)

4. Scott (7-0)

5. Conner (5-2)

6. Campbell County (4-3)

7. Dixie Heights (5-2)

8. Beechwood (4-3)

9. Cooper (2-6)

10. Newport Catholic (3-4)

About the rankings:

1. While I don’t think there are 6 teams better than Dixie in Northern Kentucky, they fall to #7 this week due to the loss to Campbell County.

2. Scott will have a chance this week to prove whether or not they belong at the #4 spot. A win over South Oldham would put them in the driver’s seat for the #1 seed in the playoffs with a showdown with Conner looming.

3. Cooper might be 2-6 but they beat Newcath head to head and are much better than the record might suggest. They could just as easily be 7-1 or 6-2.

4. Despite the close game with Ryle, Covcath moves to #3 for the simple fact that their only two losses are to Highlands and Cincinnati Moeller.

5. You very well could see a completely different ranking next week depending on the outcomes of the following games.

Anyone else agree with this?

Are you basing that off records or seeing both teams?

I don't think so. I have defended and will continue to defend Scott's schedule, but I doubt Scott would have a better record than Cov Cath if they had played their schedule. We will know exactly where Scott belongs after the next 2 weeks.

Nice article, but I didn't see a Gallatin/Walton recap. That was a pretty big game, since it essentially decided the district winner.

Thought on the rankings?

I think you are right on target Walter. I think Conner is going to beat Scott but based on everything to this point, Scott should be ranked ahead of them.

And no, Scott should not be ranked ahead of Cov Cath.
