I would say parents have way more to do with the sports being year around than the coaches. Some clubs may be at fault also but still comes down to the parents.

 

I don't disagree that parents have, obviously, allowed it. I also would argue that the pressure put on HS coaches to win is what motivates quite a few to work year round. Pressure coming from, at least partly, the parents. Understanding that quite a few coaches put the pressure on themselves.

 

It would be different if the KHSAA said, "Any KHSAA athlete that played a KHSAA sanctioned sport during the 2012-2013 school year is not allowed to play during the period of June 25th - July 9th or they are ineligible the following season." Now THAT would be a reason to get upset.

I guess I have been in really bad situstions at Holy Cross in Covington bc we could barley get our coaches to have practice when we should be practicing much less have to worry about some dead periold.

 

Bad part about a dead periold also can be it affects parent coaches also who end up being a lot of our HS and summer ball coaches.

It really affects the parent coaches more than anyone but the rules allow the parent coach the ability to be a spectator, just not to instruct during that time period.

My 2 cents worth is that the girls are practicing and playing games during this down period anyway! WHY? Because they can get on a Dry field! This is why the summer months is the opportune time to work on their game this is where the majority of the girls that are going to college get noticed while playing for their summer team! The High School Softball & Baseball season is squeezed in because school lets out around or soon after Memorial Day! The weather makes for a short high school season when half the games are often cancelled due to the weather! In the winter months there is only so much you can do indoors and just happens to be an opportune time for a dead period for softball! What good does the down period do when it occurs during the most opportune time to play the game and improve! Who does it negatively effect? Exactly the ones they are trying to protect!

Here's another point. If your son/daughter play baseball/softball only then you have the ability to take a vacation after the summer season, if you so choose. It's really a rule for multi-sport athletes families and since the KHSAA can only govern HS sports, it minimally impacts summer sports.

 

It seems like some are misinterpreting the rule as if the kids can't do anything over that time period. Nothing is stopping a kid from playing baseball, softball, pick up basketball, getting football players together and running routes...etc. It just can't be with a school coach, at a school facility or with school equipment.

Yes I know the dead period was not to blame at HC, Hell I didn't even know when the dead period was so no we NEVER had to worry about it.

 

I know than can be a spectator but kinda hard on a team to have one coach all year and then the coach have to sit out for 2 weeks bc of dead period. Like I said it's really only affecting softball and baseball, the other sports are not really going during those weeks and the other sports can play more times throughout the year than softball can.

I understand the rule I just think it only affects certain kids and programs and for sure is bad for softball, it could possible cost you 25% of your season. I KNOW you can play but most teams don't have a stand by coach in waiting for the dead period to hit.

 

I am for less rules and regulations, I really don't have a dog in this fight. The dead period could possible do a lot more harm than good for our student athletes.

 

I can see how the multi sport athlete is affected more by this rule but by saving a few we are affecting others.

Money has nothing to do with it. You can't have a dead period one week before games start AND during scrimmage season. Impractical.

Good lord. This had nothing to do with fastpitch or baseball. If fastpitch and baseball started their season in August then the dead period would be the EXACT same time.

 

We can all agree that the only option for dead period is after mid-June, right? So considering that football games start in the 3rd or 4th week of August and considering KHSAA doesn't worry about nor should they worry about non-high school summer sports when exactly should the dead period be?
