Dead Period

Featured Replies

Yes I know the dead period was not to blame at HC, Hell I didn't even know when the dead period was so no we NEVER had to worry about it.

I know than can be a spectator but kinda hard on a team to have one coach all year and then the coach have to sit out for 2 weeks bc of dead period. Like I said it's really only affecting softball and baseball, the other sports are not really going during those weeks and the other sports can play more times throughout the year than softball can.

Agreed if there is only one coach. Seems like a bad idea to have only one coach but if that's all they can do, that makes it tough.

I understand the rule I just think it only affects certain kids and programs and for sure is bad for softball, it could possible cost you 25% of your season. I KNOW you can play but most teams don't have a stand by coach in waiting for the dead period to hit.

I am for less rules and regulations, I really don't have a dog in this fight. The dead period could possible do a lot more harm than good for our student athletes.

I can see how the multi sport athlete is affected more by this rule but by saving a few we are affecting others.

I can't speak for everyone but as a parent that has a child that played club sports and High school sports, I don't give two shits about the KHSAA if their rules affected my daughter we just would not have played HS sports.

It's actually amazing to me that these elite teams your kids are playing for only have one coach. And that's not in jest because I know some of your kids are playing for legit teams from reading about their abilities.

The KHSAA's rules apparently did affect your daughter, or at least her coaches, and she still played. Blowing this way out of proportion IMO. It's not like it's a new rule.

Then moving the dead period to say, August 5-19 would be sufficient, right? Those multiple sport athletes could still have a vacation prior to summer being over....

Oh wait, the biggest money maker would be affected, so that would never happen even though it allows downtime for all the athletes.

Um...no. It would be because it's in their actual season. Nothing more, nothing less. And the biggest money maker is basketball so that doesn't work.

I'll say that dead period for us is nothing. We don't and wouldn't schedule high school workouts in the dead period because we'd only get a quarter of our team to show up...maybe. Like it's been said, most are playing summer ball, practicing 2-3 times a week and playing every weekend. We don't need to work them out. So the only thing it effects is if your summer team is coached by a high school coach that has players from their school on the team. My daughter has played right thru the dead period the last 3 years and she is coached by a high school coach that has players on the team. Parents take over for two weeks and all is good. As for year round, we started practicing for high school again school 3 weeks ago, right when most of the travel teams seasons were coming to an end. For us that's perfect. We let the kids do their thing right after the school season is over. If they don't play summer ball, they get a long break. If they do play summer, well then they don't get any break. But it's not us or the KHSAA dictating that. We do encourage summer ball, but they also know we start back up in the very late summer and fall. It's their choice. Now for the ones that don't play summer, we will hit it hard from 3 weeks ago until it gets too cold out. Then we'll go inside and hit the cages all winter. So yes, for our kids, it's year round if they choose to play summer. But it's not the coaching staff driving that. We do our best to present a culture to learn and want to improve. We have seen great results so far!

As for the comments of coaches having pressure to win, for me thats garbage. Yes, everyone wants to support a winner. However, my drive for year round practices have nothing to do with wins. They may come as a result of the workouts, but my motivation is why I coach. To teach young people life lessons and provide them with the best opportunity I can to allow them to make themselves the best they can be. It's my job to prepare them the absolute best I can for whatever comes next. Life in college and onto their career or to play college softball. Am I one of the most competitive people I know...yes! Do I want to win anything I compete in...Yes! But my motivation for coaching is stated above, to help the kids do the things they want to do and provide the best opportunities for them to reach their goals...whatever that is!

Good lord. This had nothing to do with fastpitch or baseball. If fastpitch and baseball started their season in August then the dead period would be the EXACT same time.

We can all agree that the only option for dead period is after mid-June, right? So considering that football games start in the 3rd or 4th week of August and considering KHSAA doesn't worry about nor should they worry about non-high school summer sports when exactly should the dead period be?

It's right where it should be. IMO, it takes a little better planning if you are a HS coach that's coaching a club team. Have some assistant coaches. Doesn't seem that difficult to me.

Funny thing is, all the HS baseball coaches that coach summer baseball teams figure it out. Feels like softball could too. There's no way the dead period is making that large of a negative impact on softball teams.

I am sure it does not have anything to do with softball or baseball but it does could affect these sports more than others which is my point.

Is there really a need for the dead period? What does it really accomplish? Is there kids that are going 52 weeks a year bc of HS coaches.

I agree the KHSAA doesn't worry about non-high school sports, I also believe that some of our top athletes will only be playing one sport in HS or maybe no sports in HS before to long.

Bologna. You want to win. There's nothing wrong with that. You're not doing it for ice cream and orange slices. You're doing it to build a program into a winning program. All the other stuff you said is just a means to an end. It's going about it the right way but still, the goal will be to win games by providing the best opportunities to your athletes.

You can teach the life lessons all you want but if your 5-20 every year you would be miserable.

No I am not sure it did affect my daughter, she never played club ball in softball or soccer for a HS coach. Not trying to blow it out of proportion just trying to have a discussion about it.

Softball has figured it out just like baseball but does that make it right, IMO no.

And yes you could have somebody else coach but is that right?

I'm not saying bring some person off the street. Surely those teams have more than one coach, right? I don't think that's a problem at all.

Again how many kids are helped out from the dead period? Maybe there are a lot but I don't know any.

Every kid that can take a vacation without worrying about losing a starting position or being behind in the weight room, in the gym...etc.

The vast majority of families I know that take vacations take them during the dead period...including coaches. Which is one aspect no one has touched on. Most programs are running year round. Maybe not for every single kid but for quite a few.

Of course they have more than one coach and yes kids will still play so why have the dead period? I really don't get the purpose of the rule doesn't seem to really have anything to do with the kids.

Well lets just say we run in different circles then bc I don't know anyone that has scheduled a vacation around the dead period. Again not saying people don't its just I don't know of any.

I can tell you for certain that there has been a HS summer league in years past its pops up every couple of years and its mainly for the girls that don't play summer ball but the main reason it fails year in and year out is bc of the dead period.

Thanks for telling me what I mean. If you don't know me, you have no idea. Really, how dare you tell me what I am there for. What I teach will lead to a winning program. Call it what you want...backing into it, whatever. But the motivation is to create opportunities for the girls in the program now and for years to come. Not my record as a coach. If I was concerned about winning, I wouldn't schedule as tough as I do. My team last year lost 13 games. 4 to ND (regional champs), 3 to Conner (regional runner up), 2 to Ryle (preseason #1), 1 to NCC in the district finals and 3 games against teams from down state. Those teams that we lost to were the first teams I scheduled and I scheduled them multiple times in the season because I wanted to make sure we played the best. I want our girls to strive for getting better. I could have cared less what our final record for the season was, as long as our girls were learning and getting better. One of the first things I told our parents and our AD was not to look at the wins and losses, but keep track of how your players are progressing. Focusing on the kids and their skills can lead to wins, but that AGAIN is not my motivation...so please don't tell me you know what I'm thinking again!!!

As for your bolded quote above, I take the chance that if I'm doing things the right way, I won't have to worry about wins and losses. That will take care of itself. If I was 5-20 for multiple years in a row, you're right...I'd be miserable because I failed the kids in the program. There's a lot more that goes into it, but since you know me so well, why don't you tell me!

Of course they have more than one coach and yes kids will still play so why have the dead period? I really don't get the purpose of the rule doesn't seem to really have anything to do with the kids.

I just explained it. I'm not sure how I could explain it any better. It gives the kids and families time off from "mandatory" practices to do things like vacations. If they choose not to take it and play summer ball (basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer...etc), that's their choice. However, I can tell you there are quite a few families that utilize this time so their child doesn't miss any HS practices or workouts.

And again, it's not challenged by the HS coaches because it's a welcomed break.
