Now I understand that a lot of you don't like Ohio, nor should Kentucky and the KHSAA should follow how they handle football but I think you should read the article anyway to see how much of a joke (at least to me) the KHSAA has in having six divisions for so few teams in Kentucky.

 

BTW for those who also thought that some of the Greater Catholic League teams like Elder, Moeller and La Salle were huge schools, you just might want to look at their numbers in this article too.

Theoldguy opinion: As long as Kentucky has six division with from what I understand less than 40 teams per division, it just seems a joke to call the winner of that division a State Champion, when in truth, what they are is a State Champion of 30 some odd other schools. With the number of HS playing football in the Commonwealth, the number of division should be decreased to four so the divisions are larger and more competitive.

The only problem TOG is that you don't think the state champion in a class as it is now should be called state champion because of how few schools are in that class, but who is to say that with 4 classes someone won't feel the same and say there still isn't enough schools in a class so lets not call them a state champion. I mean whats good for some may not be good enough for others.

Sooner or later you will get folks thinking there should only be 1 state champion.

These are state championships, not midwest championships.

 

I never understood why people are so concerned with how other states do there titles.

Did you happen to read that in Ohio the smallest Division has 72 teams, while the others divisions have 105 through 108?

Well I won't make the same argument about a state champion as TOG, but I agree with his post. Until the change, OH had 6 divisions with 715 football playing schools. KY 6 divisions with what, without looking it up +-220 or so football playing schools? Even with 7 divisions OH's smallest division will still have 72 teams according to the article, or roughly 1/3 of the total football playing schools in KY.

 

I have always believed, though have not stated as strongly as some of here have, that 6 divisions for football in KY is just crazy. Should be no more than 4, and actually 3 divisions would probably be more like it.

I never said that, my thing is who cares what other states do. I don't care if KY goes to 4 classes or 8 classes, I just don't let other states influence what KY does. If we were playing the other states for championships it would be different, but we aren't.

Which, I think kind of proves TOG's point. As crazy as 12 classes would be in OH, and it sounds by your post you would agree with that, there would still be more teams in each division even with that than there are in KY with 6 classes. There would have to be between 19 or 20 classes in OH to equal the approximate number of teams per class as in KY with 6A. When you think about it in those terms, having 6 classes in KY seems even further out there.

That would be crazy, I agree. I just don't understand what the fascination is with how other states clasify their football.

Again, how does 6 state champions equate to "Everybody"?

 

As I said, if you were so much for Ohio's way of doing things, then wouldn't KY need to go to a 2 class system to come close to the number of schools that Ohio has in their classes?
