Corbin Redhounds

Steve Jewell's Corbin Redhounds are coming off their first losing record (5-6) since 1995, and his young Redhounds are hoping to turn things around this season.

It's not going to be easy, though. Corbin will have to find a replacement for leading rusher Matt Jewell, who led the team in rushing, and receiver Josh Jewell, who led the team in receiving.

Corbin is hoping to make some noise in district play this season, and will have to find a way to upend both Wayne County and Bell County, who are looking to to field some top-notch teams on the grid. The Redhounds will also be tested because both games against Bell County and Wayne County will be on the road. - ouch.

The Redhounds will be led the quarterback Taylor Waddle, who could also be used as a multi-back this season and he'll be joined by tailback Jake Coppock while 6'4, 260-pound Zach Ingle is looking to anchor the offensive line.

Both Waddle and Coppock will look to help out on the defensive side of the ball along with linebackers Tanner Powers and Cai Jackson. Powers is one of the top defensive players in Class 3A's District 4.

"We will still be young," Jewell said. "We will have a revamped offensive line and defensive line. We do have about four returning on offense and defense. Many of them will be indifferent positions, however.

"I believe we will be hungry," he added. "To be successful, we must find some leaders that model the type of player we need for the rest of our team."

Schedule

The Redhounds will open things up against Southwestern Pulaski on Aug. 23 before hosting Perry Central on Aug. 30 in the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic. Corbin will hit the road on Sept. 6 against Trimble County before hosting Danville Sept. 13. The Redhounds will face rival South Laurel on the road on Sept. 20 before playing a key road district contest against Wayne County on Oct.4 A win over the Cardinals will put Corbin in prime position to make a run at the district crown, a loss, well, it would be tough to win the district crown. Corbin will be home against McCreary Central Oct. 11 before traveling to play Bell County Oct. 18. The Redhounds will finish district district play on Oct. 25 against Casey County. Corbin will face a solid test in its regular season finale on Nov. 1 - a home game against Knox Central.

Players to watch

Tanner Powers (linebacker) - Powers is as solid as they come on defense for Corbin.

Jake Coppock (tailback) — Coppock will be expected to carry the load in the backfield.

Taylor Waddle (quarterback/free safety) - Waddle could be used as a multi-back option this season, according to Jewell.

Zach Ingle (offensive line) - The 6'5 260-pound lineman is looking to do some damage on the line for Corbin.

Cai Jackson (linebacker) - The duo of Jackson and Powers could spell trouble for opposing teams.

Coach Jewell certainly isn't trying to boost his win total by scheduling lightly, is he? I applaud his courage.

You mentioned replacing both Jewells. I don't recall either being a senior.

Both Josh Jewell and Matt Jewell were seniors last season.

Which team was it courageous to schedule? Knox Central will be the only out of district team that it could be considered courageous to schedule...the rest not so much.

Danville is always tough. While I'm not sure what they bring to the table this season, both Perry Central and Southwestern are 5A and are capable of some pretty good seasons. Combine those with KC and a district schedule that includes Bell and Wayne, I'd call that a competitive schedule.

Very Good District schedule I agree...

Years past Danville and Southwestern would be good games...

Danville is not Danville anymore, at least not yet. Coach Harp left the cupboard pretty bare when he left. May take a few seasons for them to get back, but I think new coach will get them back.

Southwestern may have the worst team in their history this year...QB transferred to Russell County, knowing his dad if they were going to be worth anything at all he would have stayed.

I don't know much about Perry Central this season so I have no idea how tough a game that should be.

IMO if Corbin loses more than 1 non-district game they are in for a long season, that district will destroy them if they can't win these non-district games.

Well, maybe Bell and Wayne will. I can't see Casey or McCreary destroying Corbin this season, although Casey will be improved.

According to the fans of other teams in the area, Corbin plays virtually the weakest schedule in the state year in and year out. Corbin could play Trinity, Highlands and St X, but if they didn't play that fan's team, the schedule would be weak.

I think Corbin's schedule is fine, I was commenting because someone said this schedule was in some way courageous. It is relative in strength to most others in the area, no shame in it...but they aren't playing the NFC West either.

My gripe was always Corbin's weak district. However, the last redistricting has more than solved that issue.

OK, I'll withdraw the adjective "courageous" and replace it with "fine". I just thought that with all the grumbling I'd been hearing from some of Corbin's fans, it would have been tempting for Coach Jewell to try to schedule some bunnies to improve the ol' win column.k

That's a fair gripe. Another that most Redhound fans have is that they would rather Corbin play some area teams every year, such as Whitley, Middlesboro and Knox Central, rather than teams such as GRC, Tates Creek, LCA, etc.

Corbin should fair better this year than last. Too many close games just went the wrong way for them.
