Retirement - is it really possible?

Featured Replies

Retirement is a fairly new concept.

Will history look back and see that it was only taken advantage of for roughly 100 years?

Is pensions even viable?

Is pensions and SS just giant ponzi schemes that someday will have to pay the piper?

Retirement is a very real possibility if people are smart and invest in their retirement from the onset with 401ks. Otherwise, they'll be working their entire lives and have only themselves to blame.

What about teachers or others locked into retirement plans mandated by their unions?

There's no rule that states they can't open an IRA. Again, if they can't retire, the only person they have to blame is themselves.

Agree, I've got a pension, 401K, & a Roth IRA. However I need all that and SS, because I have a wife that loves "things". :lol2::cry:

UPS parks closer.

Here's my "plan"...I will inherit (along with my sisters and brother) 83 acres in Grayson Co. I will park a double wide somewhere flat and live on my social security. :D

My 401K is all I will have to leave my kids (besides the family land). Luckily they inherited (along with their cousins) 90 acres in Bullitt Co.

For LB's sake I hope that's why it's parked there.

Is the 83 farm land?

Could be...used to be.

If its tillable it could actually be worth a nice chunk of money. Farm land has gotten outrageous in price. There's been several auctions recently in Henderson County that brought $5000-$6000 an acre.

Yeah....not in Grayson Co. We can't even find someone who wants to lease it. I paid my mom's taxes back in the fall. The assessed value was less than $10K for the whole 83 acres. Granted, there's only the house and it's not a "working" farm at this time. But in the past there has been tobacco, corn, hay and cucumbers (raised them to sell to Paramount). Also had cattle when I was really small.

Oh...and we can never sell it. My dad was very adamant about that.

Because my truck is the 1st one on the sort, so I see EVERY package that goes out for delivery. It's always a pleasant conversation when I call at 7:30 in the morning asking her what she ordered this time. :lol2:
