Somerset - Top All-Time 3 Players

Featured Replies

Once again, just my thoughts on the matter. Plain and simple I would take any of them. There has been so much talent to come through Somerset High School that I feel a lot of great ones have gone unnoticed. I really believe there are a lot of great lineman who have played there that contributed to such great numbers by all these athletes. The unsung heroes are the ones I will remember from my days on the gridiron. What makes all these legends great is there humbleness. I have not met one past or present who doesn't give props to his teammates and not truly mean it.

Trust me when I tell you that Jumper Dad, SHS Future and I saw Newell, Ford and Perkins all play. Both Jumper Dad and I are old enough to remember back to Venable with SHS Future just being a couple of years younger. I played with Massey for a season myself. As good as the trio that you mentioned were they were just a notch below the ones we've mentioned. They'd all have a shot at making it into an all-time top 10 but not the top 3.

Or you could look at it as those great players you mentioned did no more than the talent already listed.

Sexton was on a State Runner-up team his Junior Season and what was probably the best AA team his Senior season (a 1 point loss kept that from happening)

Massey was likewise on a State Runner-up team in his Junior Campaign.

Venable was a State Runner-up his Senior year I believe.

Might even add the older Jumpers played in the 4 Class System rather than the current 6 Class System and accomplished just as much. Not deriding your selections just pointing out that it's all conjecture on whether they would have had better numbers on other squads. Massey handed the ball off a lot to James Fletcher. Sexton watched Stephens and Hines before him get more than a few touches while waiting on the ball to be thrown his way.

The bolded still makes me want to :puke:

I trust ya. I would have loved to seen them play. I am sure it was truly special to see them all in action. I may be a little biased (as I'm sure we all are) because those guys were in my era and I know first hand what they are capable of. I did not get that luxury with the rest of these guys. I would dare to say we would all be shocked by just how much talent there was throughout the years if we were in the thick of things every year. I'm down with any Briar Jumper so to me this is just fun to see what everyone thinks. I love to learn about the past and talk about the future of SHS football.

I was in the radio booth for that one and it was a perfect storm for Boyle. Somerset dominated the stats and handed the ball over too much. Boyle had big play after big play then finally made the stand on the 2 point conversion.

That was the best Somerset team I ever saw including the Massey/Fletcher teams IMO.

IMO it was the best as well. I actually like the 2009 team over the Massey/Fletcher team for many personal reasons.

If we hand the ball to Stevens on that 2pt conversion, what do you think are the odds he would have made it. The choice to either call the QB keeper or the QB deciding to keep the ball has been oft speculated/criticized over the years here in Bunny Town!!!

I have no doubt that Stevens scores on that play. Neikerk (sp?) was a great QB. That was not his forte. Stevens had 200 yards rushing that night and why you don't give him the ball is beyond me. I was in the radio booth and doing color that night. I said: "They can run for it inside or off tackle, pass for it - do anything they want because Boyle's defense hasn't stopped them tonight." That was the only time the Rebels did stop them. I think every other time was a turnover.

Ancient thread here but I think in my time watching Somerset, some of the best have been Trey and Tevin Slaughter, Storm Wilson, and of course Kaiya Sheron. Kris and Kam Hughes are 2020s bright spots. Kris has a real chance to become the all-time leading scorer/rusher in school history these next couple weeks.
