Why do the umpires in baseball not rotate regions in the tournament like basketball refs?

 

And football...

 

My guess is travel expense.

 

In football they travel just once a week but I guess the argument could be made that basketball also plays more than once a week like baseball so IDK.

I'm going to guess it may be related to travel. I assume most of these guys have day jobs, to travel to a different region for a 5pm game may not be possible. Day 1 of the regions this probably isn't an issue, but the other two days it could be.

So why is baseball different than softball? My husband is a 10th region softball umpire who just did the 11th region games this week in Frankfort.

Softball is the same as baseball. The association that covers the 10th region also covers the 11th region. The 10th/11th region association covers both the 10th and 11th region tournaments.

 

Baseball and Softball coaches like familiarity a lot more than basketball and football coaches is the only reason I can think of.
