Content....Was at the Frosh game with a pretty good view of the play.....assuming you are referring to the tag/no tag play at second...

 

Here is the way I see it.....If you were down the right field line, then you had a view of the play that the ump didn't have the luxury of having. From my point of view, between where you and the ump was standing (but elevated), it looked like it could have been either way.

 

Bottom line.......no way a single ump could make a definitive call on that play, and if a definitive call isn't available, then the ump should call safe.

 

I think the bigger issue is the only one ump at these games. SWOL has two umps from 6th grade one....HS should have two umps also, at all levels......IMO.

 

Another call a single ump would never be sure of is the throw down to third by the catcher trying to pick off a runner moving back to third from down the third base line. No way he can see the hands or tag.

 

At the Frosh CCH/Cooper game today, I saw an Ump handle a situation the way he should......Runners second and third. Batter hits a double to left. Coach appeals that the batter missed first. Ump responds "Coach, I had two runners coming around to score and couldn't see the base at first"......SAFE....

 

Until all games have two umps......we have to live with the limitations......

 

My view on the call in the frosh game... The tag was in the head region as the runner tried to go down and around the play. Before the glove got to the region around the runners head, the helmet was positioned correctly. As the glove went to the head, the helmet was dislodged from the runners head. Now I'm not claiming to be Albert Einstein but it seems to me like contact had to be made to dislodge the helmet (thus a double play which sends the game to the 7th with Dixie up 1).

In soccer.....teams can "block" a ref from doing their regular season games.....not sure how many, but they have a certain # of blocks.....

 

 

......is there anything similar in baseball? I think I heard that coaches rank each ump after the games......true?

 

Yes a coach can get 3 blocks at each level every year. And there are evaluations to be completed after every game.

Those helmets are bought for the varsity players....larger sizes......they are pretty loose on the Frosh..... a slide gives a pretty big jolt to the head and the ump only sees the helmet after the slide......and had to move his eyes to first base to see the play there......

 

Not saying I disagree....just pointing out possibilities.....and with only one ump.....no way to tell for sure, and if your not sure, the call has to be safe......having only one ump caused this issue.....

I was told, way back when I was in umpire school, that if a play is too close to call, it is an out. One out closer to the end of the game!

I wasn't there. However, I do find it difficult to believe that two umpires called a ball that was "obviously foul" a HR.

I was there.I have no dog in the fight either way.The ball was NO DOUBT FOUL.It was a nice shot though and in the books its a hr.But in reality it was a long strike that 2 umpires missed the call on.
