All the talk about the home run ball, well I was there and had no dog in the fight. The ball was clearly foul, not even close. The umps clearly didn't see it. I'm guessing only one was trying to watch it and the sin was down the right field line and probably was in his eyes.

 

Everyone we were sitting with including the entire Cooper team saw it hit the pole holding up the net past the fence a good foot or two right of the foul pole.

That's all I was saying, I'm not saying it wasn't a well hit ball or that those three runs were the difference in the game (CC would still have won 6-4 without them). However, it was a definite turning point in the game and a blow to the morale of Dixie. You would hope the would be mentally tougher but this is a very young team.

I missed this game yesterday while watching the Dixie freshmen have a similar bad ump outing at CovCath which did make the difference in their game. Interesting both scenarios stem from a Dixie-CCH matchup. Two missed calls in that game allowed for two runs to score which wouldn't have. Final score was 4-3. Those "objective" folks who witnessed that game know there were bad calls and it's unfortunate an ump on an off day effected the outcome as much as he did. It's about the kids and the game, not them!

 

I watched a field judge clearly miss 2 out of 5 close calls at first last week. If I can make the call from the third base fence or even beyond the LF fence, how on Gods good earth, can someone less than 40 feet away duff calls when you simply are looking at a runners foot to the bag and listening for a ball to hit a mit and confirm possession. People are human and make mistakes, I understand that. But when bad calls are influencing the outcomes of games, whatever, if any governing ump body should take action and step in. My fear is that the "checks and balances" may be the ones making the bad calls.

 

The players, coaches, and fans deserve these guys to be at their best. If they're not they need to find something else to do with their time! In this economy I'd like to think there is a surplus of folks out there who would do well and enjoy umping and judging games. If my back wasn't a wreck from playing football in hs and college and I was 10 years younger, I'd do it!

 

Hope these cases are flukes and not the norm. Sorry for the soapbox!

There was an infield fly called on a pop up down the right field line that was a very questionable call as well. The Dixie 2nd basemen was never in a position to make an ordinary catch.

My point was not to make any comment about the veracity of the call. I wasn't there.

 

My point was to show why 90% of people who MIGHT be interested pass on the opportunity.

Content....Was at the Frosh game with a pretty good view of the play.....assuming you are referring to the tag/no tag play at second...

 

Here is the way I see it.....If you were down the right field line, then you had a view of the play that the ump didn't have the luxury of having. From my point of view, between where you and the ump was standing (but elevated), it looked like it could have been either way.

 

Bottom line.......no way a single ump could make a definitive call on that play, and if a definitive call isn't available, then the ump should call safe.

 

I think the bigger issue is the only one ump at these games. SWOL has two umps from 6th grade one....HS should have two umps also, at all levels......IMO.

 

Another call a single ump would never be sure of is the throw down to third by the catcher trying to pick off a runner moving back to third from down the third base line. No way he can see the hands or tag.

 

At the Frosh CCH/Cooper game today, I saw an Ump handle a situation the way he should......Runners second and third. Batter hits a double to left. Coach appeals that the batter missed first. Ump responds "Coach, I had two runners coming around to score and couldn't see the base at first"......SAFE....

 

Until all games have two umps......we have to live with the limitations......

One thing to remember is the lack of officials to do games!

 

As Clyde posted with all the suprlus of folks out of work or needing money, the reason for lack of interest in working the game isn't what you receive in pay but it is in all the in the stands officials who know all the rules better than the men doing the job, that keep those who would be willing to officiate from doing it.

 

It's pretty easy to sit in the stands and make a mistake in making a call but try doing it on the field in front of everyone and see how you get treated for a few bucks.

and it is getting that way sooner than you think.

I know there aren't games without umps TOG, what I'm saying is if they want to ump and fans bother them so much then throw fans out if they hate them so much.

 

Personally I haven't seen a problem at any game this year yet. If they are complaining about fans that much then being an ump may not be the best choice for them.

 

At the same time, if they didn't blow major calls they wouldn't have to worry about it in the first place.

Bottom line is that they are not doing it for free. They get paid to do a job. They really have no one to answer to unless they get out of hand. They are the gods on the field and I do not seeing anyone there watching them to make sure they are doing there job right. They can toss players, coaches and fans, yet if they continue to do there job bad there doesn't seem to be any repercussions. I like the majority of the guys that are out there, but they need to learn not to have "Rabbit Ears" and move on. If it becomes personal from a fan to an umpire then toss them out of the park. That should be one reason I can think of that would a time to send the fan home. I could be mistaken but these guys make $65.00 a game. If that is the case, that's some pretty good jack if you look at most games being about 2 hours.

In soccer.....teams can "block" a ref from doing their regular season games.....not sure how many, but they have a certain # of blocks.....
