Bluedad
I figure I might as well start this before piggybacking on another Freshman football thread. This is a special group and hopefully all these boys will stay with football over the next four years. Names to remember: Vonhandorf, Shelton, Pilger, Thiel, Ziglemeyer(sp), Best, Schrand, Crowe, Maier- just to name a few. Lots of athleticism and leadership with this group. Can't wait to see them bolster the upperclassmen in the years to come. Though I suspect they will be outstanding next year, Im not worrying about the Frosh Championship - just want to see them stay, enjoy themselves and excel. C-BOY78
I have heard that this could be the largest freshman team in many, many years, well over 50. Someone told me a couple weeks ago that they had over 70 signed up. Sad thing is they can not start working out until they completed enrollment, usually 1st of April. Also new head coach. Ted Edgington . Ted was the first middle school head coach, and set the foundation that is just starting to show at the varsity level.

So figuring some attrition and a couple new faces at least 50 incoming Frosh sounds about right. 70 would be amazing. They had 48 Frosh this past season which was high - but this upcoming class should go well over those numbers. Ted was an excellent choice for the position. The boys know him from the CYF- what's more he knows how to connect with them and they respond to him. He wil do very well in this position. Zuzu
Are the current 8th graders able to workout as a team (lifting/cardio) before April 1st?
C-BOY78
Are the current 8th graders able to workout as a team (lifting/cardio) before April 1st? No, the school will not permit any organized workouts until they are enrolled in school, which will not be completed until March 15. That is one of the reasons I believe CovCath freshman appear under-strength. They are 3-4 months behind the other schools.
blitzoneveryplay
I have heard the incoming Freshman class a CCH is unbelievable. I have been told no one will be with in two scores. Could this be the class that finally breaks the Blue Birds streak? I thought Edgington was a varsity coach, why is he now coaching the Freshman? Is it a result of his day time job ? Ted is a very good coach and he is retired from Covington PD and will do a great job with younger players. I have not heard otherwise but he could still be coaching at the varsity level. This could also mean Coach Ray is not retiring from coaching and is going to coach a few more years.
Content1
This group is fun to watch, very athletic, well disciplined, and coached. Vonhandorf and Shelton should anchor this team for the next 4 years. I watched their 8th grade championship game against Turkeyfoot and they put on a clinic against a very talented Turkeyfoot squad. Most impressive was a CovCath coaching staff more active and leading 8th graders than most high school varsity teams. To answer an earlier question it wouldn't surprise me if this group beats Highlands their junior and senior years. And with a spirit that will never die and wins over the Birds...that's a beautiful thing if you're a blue colonel fan!

We'll see about the two scores thing. Freshman HS ball is a level up from middle school and they will be exposed to more speed and strength than they saw last year. It wouldn't surprise me to see them win the Frosh Championship but I wouldn't expect all games to be blowouts. Coach Wirth recognizes the importance of laying a solid foundation for the Freshmen and Ted gives him exactly that. I could be wrong but he may still be involved with varsity as well. I4C
I saw this team play last year and they are outstanding and very well coached. Very possible that they will win every game by 2 TDs but you never know about other high schools that have several feeder programs. I recall another left handed QB that is a year ahead of VonHandorf that was also a stud? Taking nothing away from Cole but I thought that kid was better. Nice problem to have. Good luck
Clyde
Biggest frosh team I can recall in last 10 years or so was about 65 players.

Good luck Ben Dressman (younger brother of Sam) is currently a Freshman and probably who you a thinking about. Ben is very athletic like his brother (in fact there is yet another Dressman coming in next year as well). Time will tell as to whether Ben stays at QB- some may depend on how much Vonhandorf develops. The current Frosh class (soon to be Soph's) has some kids who will be fun to watch over the next few years incl : Dressman, Darlington, McGinness, Timmerman and Schwartz just to name a few.
