BlueTip
I'm bored waiting for some real games to start. I was talking with my son about a play we saw in a knothole game a few years ago. Thought I'd do a rules quiz to kill some time. If you're an umpire please refrain from answering. Scenario: Runners on first (R1) and third (R3) with two outs. High hopper hit to the second baseman who fields it and runs toward R1 to tag him. There's a brief rundown (not sure why the kid didn't just throw to 2nd or 1st). While the rundown is underway, R3 crosses the plate. The 2Bman tags R1 for the third out of the inning (after R3 has crossed the plate). Does the run count? Clyde
Not an umpire. My inclination is to say no run since the lead runner was called out going to be base he was force to.

IT should count unless a rule has been changed. Any run that crosses the platebeforre the 3rd out is made should count. although to be honest unless it is a force play at another base they hardley count the run even if the baserunner crosses home before the force is made. npuff
yes-batter had to be safe at first, then run counts before third out is made
npuff
correct answer?
BlueTip
Clyde got it. The run doesn't score if the third out is a force out and it was in this case. The "force" out is a force out because the runner (R1) is forced to run, not because the fielder tagged the runner or the base. So the run does not count. Hellbird
I was wrong and Clyde was right. I looked it up and the run doesn't count as long as the 3rd out was a force play no matter what base or how the out was made.
Clyde
1 out. Runners on first (R1) and third (R3). R1 is off on the pitch. Batter hits a line drive. Second baseman catches the line drive ie it didn't touch the ground. Batter is out (2nd out). F4 throws to first to double off the runner who was off on the pitch. Runner on third scores before the runner on first is declared out. Defense leaves the field after the third out. Does the run count?
BlueTip
Time plays can be confusing. I believe in Clyde's example that the run counts.

Clyde
The runner on third must tag up. For this debate that's not the correct answer. As the play stands when I left it (ie runner on third scored before the runner on first was called out for leaving too early) the run definitely counts even though the runner on third didn't "tag." There are now 3 outs. The run counts. Unless what ?
rjs4470
Here's another.... Same runners..1st and 3rd. This time, nobody out. The infield is playing in on the grass to prevent the runner on third from scoring. The ball is hit just out of the second basemen's reach, and then hits the runner heading to second. What is the correct call??

As far as your question, I'm still struggling.
