I would say ask the AAU coach if they mind if you miss for softball.

There have been many threads like this in different parts of BGP but yes everything interferes with softball and it seems softball usually takes a back seat.

The AAU coach should understand this is a high school sport and if that player is a valuable part of his AAU team then he should respect the player, the school, the coach and most importantly the teammates of the softball team. and the AAU coach should work with the high school schedule not the other way around.

They all interfere.

That just seems backward from what it should be. If thats the case its no wonder the struggles NKY fast pitch has as a whole.

My oldest plays high school softball, but also plays AAU basketball. She rarely had an issue with any interference last year, mainly because our high school softball team rarely plays or practices on Saturday or Sunday. And what few times there was an issue of having to miss AAU basketball practice or games due to high school softball, her AAU coaches were real cool with it.

Mine also plays AAU, High school softball and competitive summer softball. I actually have two girls that do that. It's a tough schedule, but we make it work. AAU doesn't interfere too much with us either because of the same reason. We make the high school softball team the priority if there are conflicts, just because we feel we owe that respect to that team. Our AAU is flexible and understands why we choose softball first during softball season. She may miss a AAU few practices occasionally, but for the most part she practices and very seldom misses games because they are on Saturdays and Sundays.

Through the years numerous proposals have been made to restrict high school athletes from playing on outside AAU teams etc during the school year. Currently only basketball and football has restrictions. The proposals have always been voted down because schools in Louisville, Lexington, and even some in Northern Ky were worried that given the restriction kids would choose to play on the outside teams and it would hurt or in some cases destroy their high school teams. It is a concern particularly for small schools. We tell them that everything we do comes first period. It has never been an issue for us.

In my opinion that is how it should be.

Running into a lot of this on our team. Don't have the numbers to be to strict on practice but do feel it is detrimental to the advancement of fastpitch in NKY. We respect when other sports are in season, I don't see why it is not reciprocated.

So I understand your response, is what you are saying that the High School teams need to adhere to the schedules of the Club Volleyball, AAU Basketball and Club Soccer coaches? So I assume that in boy's baseball that all of the coaches have an understanding for the same?

 

IMO, if a player goes out for a high school team she is making the comittment to her team until that team has been eliminated from season play, such as losing in the district, regional or state tournament play. In some cases girls may be cut from a team or have to sit behind a part time player, so if a spot is won by another player that plays club or AAU sports but that player only shows up when there is no conflict with the her schedule that is ok? While that player may be a lot better, I feel it is not fair to the girls that either may be cut or if made the team sit the bench behind that part time player. Just as everyother sport there are those girls that like one sport more than the other and I understand that, but to possibly miss practices or games to attend a non high school event to me warrents some type of disciplinary actions.

 

It seems that some feel fast pitch is the rec sport and that the club or AAU sports are the demanded sport. Again, IMO I feel that the coach for the AAU sport or Club sport should talk with the player and suggest that they committ to their high school softball coach and team. Don't the fast pitch coaches have to wait for the winter season sports to end before they ask for players to attend workouts or practices? It is a respect factor and I feel if players are made to decide on which sport to play... high school or AAU/Club that is a lot of pressure for a young adult. If all coaches work with the player, why can''t this work? I know that one of the post said that it could cause girls not to play a sport, but that is happening in other sports so why not set the same restrictions that basketball and football have? Or even a better idea, why doesnt the KHSAA and the AAU organizers and Club sport organizers hold a summit and try to find a happy medium???

 

While not having any direct involvement with this issue, to me it seems that some type of resolution could be made for the betterment of the kids!!

My daughter plays softball and basketball for Boone. Last year I asked Coach Fookes if my daughter should play AAU to help her game and she said no. She actually encouraged my daughter to play softball and that there would be plenty of time for basketball. Most of Boone's girls play muliple sports and the coaches for the most part work well together.
