Last night in a game I attended here's what happened, and I have a question.

 

A player was issued a technical foul which made his 5th foul. As he was issued the foul he pulled his jersey from his shorts and ran out of the gym. Not just out of the gym, but into the parking lot. This all before the official who made the call could get to the scorer's table to announce the harm. The opposing team picks a shooter, he is given the ball on the other end to shoot the shots. The disqualified player is still out of the gym. A student had to go out to retrieve him and he came back in while the opposing player completed the shots. He then came back in the gym, stood on the floor until the second shot was made then flopped down on the bench. I have a friend who was in attendance who used to officiate, he said that the player was not allowed to leave the playing surface until he was replaced. I have never seen that with a disqualified player ever. So, in my normal style, I disagreed. Then I thought that perhaps there may be a rule of that ilk regarding a disqualified player remaining on the floor until a substitute was inserted for him.

Is there such a rule? What is the proper call? I wonder if the player should have received another technical foul for his display?

Your friend is correct. It was a POE a few years ago.

 

The player should have received another T. Most officials will have some leniency but such a blatant act should have warranted a T.

I have no idea on the rule, but I thought players stayed on the floor to allow the alloted time for the coach to substitute.

Another thing people seem to think is that a coach has 30 seconds or a minute to replace a disqualified player. Incorrect. They have 20 seconds. This has been the case for 3-4 years now.

There are some coaches that aren't aware of this either, but I won't mention names.
