What teams have been practicing?

Featured Replies

The 25 girls are for all three levels. They are getting big turnout from a lot of middle school students.

I believe a lot of the girls are middle schoolers. Not sure what the basketball program will add but general consensus is this team will be on the younger side anyway. It is also not known who will tryout that outside of the BB players. But the ones showing up are showing some dedication and the older girls are having a good influence on the younger crop. It will be interesting to see who signs up next week that hasn't been participating. Coach C definitely has helped drive the off season. I don't think it will take too long for the girls to start drinking the same blue kool aid Dale provides for the football squad. Tradition is built on commitment and dedication. Both of the latter are beginning to build.

Carroll County has been going at it since school started. We only had 13 girls in the whole program last year. 1 graduated and another starter chose not to play this year due to family issues. Numbers are better this year but all new players are mostly 6th graders with no softball experience at all.

That is very impressive to have 25 girls at pre season work outs. Any more that are playing basketball or just haven't shown up yet? I assume the large numbers may have something to do with the new coach. Is that correct?

25 is impressive how many are returning Varsity from last year didnt they only graduate one senior (Hollinsworth) and didnt have any Juniors?

They have a couple for sure playing basketball! Coach Coffeys daughter who is a very good basketball player and I am sure will be an exciting defensive shortstop! Question is will daughter be like father and be a hitter? I think they have another young girl that is on the basketball team that is a pretty good softball player "Quillen" maybe a catcher but extrememly exciting on the base paths! I saw them both play 14U over the summer and both are very exciting young players!

Sounds like Highlands is moving in the right direction.

am I stupid, or isn't organized practice not allowed before tomorrow? Conditioning, I can see, but these teams have been batting, tossing, etc. since school started???

I think KHSAA changed the rule to allow voulentary workouts during offseason.

Correct. I believe they can now do anything they want in any sport except during the dead period and as long as it is not mandatory. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but this is how I understand the new KHSAA rule.

That is my understanding also, I do think it is suppose to be up to the AD at each school to decide how much offseason work can be done.

maybe im reading an old rulebook? just looked it up today...it seems a shame that so many schools do next to nothing until january or february when sooo much progress could be being made....

All comes down to the coaches in that regard and what they are willing to do for their team....DD's been going pretty steady, usually 3 days a week, even a couple weeks where they snuck in a fourth and solid through Christmas break, since mid Nov, with damn near full participation.....about half and half strength/conditioning and practice both inside and out.....new coaches have really been building the excitement, and pushing the girls which has led to a few(thankfully, IMO) weeding themselves out....come friday when they put the pedal to the metal the one's that have remained, and make the cut through tryouts will definitely be hitting the ground running....i think the culture of any program, good and bad, comes from the coaches, and the team personality comes from the girls.

Even worse when they don't start on the 15th and have their first official game in about 3 weeks.

Can't wait for the girls to get out in the dirt - Love highschool softball!

there are rules and there are "loopholes" some schools find them and others follow rules to the letter. Looking forward to watching some good games this spring. I thought Quillian was also a pitcher at Highlands? She was when she was younger? Staying in shape is never a bad thing.

I thought I was as die hard as they come when it comes to softball. But to love HS softball you have me beat. Good luck to HHS.
