Newport Central Catholic 61 Newport 54 9th Region All "A" Finals

Featured Replies

The Breds claim their 9th All "A" regional title since 2000 with a hard fought 61-54 victory over the Wildcats. This game was much different than the meeting a month ago when the Breds won going away by 29pts. All three of the NewCath "bigs" Weyer, Schulte, & McDonald are still battling flu-like symptoms, was told McDonald had temp. over 100 degrees this morning.

The 1st half sees both squads playing somewhat sloppy, mainly turning the ball over.

In the 3rd quarter the Breds struggle to find the basket for a stretch and the Wildcats get the hot hand and take a 4 pt. led shortly before the quarter ends, but Brennen Devoto connects on a trey with 2 ticks on the clock and the Breds maintain the 1 pt. advantage.

In the 4th with the game tied at 48 with 3:10 remaining Michael Bueter nails a 3 three off a screen from McDonald. Then Newport makes what I thought were "crucial" mistakes. On two consecutive possessions and the Wildcats down 3 & 5 pts, Michael Turner, who may have attempted 1 or 2 shots in the game, and no treys, fires up 3's to no avail. But the Wildcats are not out of this yet. With NewCath up 55-48 JaSean Short nails a long 3 with :27.0 on the clock to make 55-51. Michael Bueter is fouled on the inbounds, and of all things, he misses BOTH free throws. Newport comes down court and with :17.0 on the clock Marquis Commodore connects on his 5th three of the game (all 5 nothing but net and a hand in his face) and it's a 1 pt. game. However the Breds hit 7 free throws from this point on and that's your ballgame.

As was stated in other threads about the Wildcats, if they played smarter basketball they could play with anybody. They have the talent, however I don't think they are disciplined enough. JaSean Short finishes with 21 and Commodore 15, all on 3's. I will say it was a treat to watch these two the last two nights.

For the Breds, another solid night from the usual suspects, Bueter 21, McDonald 11, Pangallo 10, Devoto 8, Schulte 6 & 12+ rebs., Weyer 5. Tip of the cap to Brennen Devoto on another great job. Also to the bench players who give the starters well need breaks, total team effort.

NewCath (17-2) 13-14-13-21 61

Newport (13-5) 12-08-19-15 54

10... They've won 7 of the last 10. We talked about it on our broadcast last night.

BTW whoever your PBP guy was last night was much better.

Clarification - are you saying better than the PBP on the Holy Cross/Newport game?

As for the game, Michael Commodore had one hell of a tournament. I believe he was either 8-8 or 8-9 from outside between the Holy Cross and Newcath games. Came up with big shot after big shot last night to keep the Wildcats in the game.

Tell Pat nice job. IMO the regular guy could learn from him.

Pat doesn't get as caught up in officiating. Leaves that to the color guy

I agree though that Pat does a good job.

Marquis Commodore

I believe he has an older cousin named Michael...always get their names mixed up.

Marquis Commodore

I remember Tony Commodore back in the late 80's at Newport. He was a great player WHO died in a car wreck after High School. I am curious if he is any relation.

Tony is the uncle of Marquis. Tony was actually being recruited by Virginia when he was a freshman.

Constructive feedback here for your Friday night Holy Cross/Newport PBP guy. He had too many editorial comments including officiating. Plus, I thought he was wrong on a number of his editorial comments and I had no bias due to allegiance to either team. When you make an editorial comment that 75% of the viewers will view differently, that is not good for a PBP person who should be totally unbiased.

You're a closet NewCath fan. It's ok. Some day you will be comfortable with it.
