I remember it starting around the days of Ohio St/Michigan wanting a rematch in the title game and then Florida waxed Ohio St. I said myself I am annoyed by it, but to act like it is only UK fans is completely wrong.

 

I was nuanced in my critique. It sounds stupid when any fan chants their conference rather than their school. I just noted that it seems even sillier for UK fans to do it in a football context. Just like it would be if it was an Auburn hoops fan cheering on UK via the conference chant.

I'd guess that for a lot of Louisville fans, it's in response to the stupidity of this phenomena:

That is especially so when Louisville fans hear Kentucky fans chanting it in relation to football, as though UK somehow contributes to the overall quality and depth of the nation's best conference, as though UK football is somehow validated by what Florida/Alabama/LSU et al achieves on the field.

 

It isn't just in football. I was watching the One Shining Moment videos tonight to see when they switched from Teddy to Luther and whatever her name was (Hudson?) and back and I distinctly heard an SEC chant after the 1998 Final Four as well as the 2006 Final Four...You know now that I think about it the last 20 years I believe the SEC has 6 National Titles in basketball while the Big East has 4. We won't even talk about football and baseball...The SED schools take pride in their conference and root for each other when they're playing against other conferences. Each school contributes to the overall reputation of the league in their own way. The conference is simply the best athletic conference overall in the country and the individual schools celebrate that...
