Highlands 51 Southwestern 37

Guess who's baaaaccckkk???? Schaeffer comes off the bench with 14 and leads the birds with a nice win over a very nice Southwestern team. Vanessa Fisse with another nice game added 12 and Daley added 10.

My understanding is Southwestern is pretty young. If their key players are young, this team will be a force in the next couple years! Already a good team.

HHS slowed Southwestern down and took care of the ball. HHS executed in the half court when they needed to.

Addison Corder led Southwestern with 5 threes and 19 Pts. "Somebody guard double zero!" Heard a lot of that tonight!

Nice Team Win for the Birds this afternoon. Fun fact, first team to hold the Corder girl to under 20 for the first time in 41 games... Wow nice defense.

Nice to see Leah getting back into the groove tonite after coming off the injured reserve.

Speaking of injuries, rumor has it a Highlands coach may have damaged his rotator cuff during the game after showing one of the HHS girls how to seperate themself from a defender.

Looked like he was attempting to do a wind mill type action but I think he might have caught his shirt sleeve on his glasses during his follow through causing the injury. Stay tuned...

Should be a good match up in the finals, I know nothing about PRP but they must be playing well. See you all this afternoon.

The Highlands coach is trying to imitate his brother in law and injured himself.....

Southwestern has no seniors and 1 junior. They start 4 sophomores and a freshman, 1st two subs are freshman and 8th grader. They will be tough to handle in coming years. Also, just a question, for anyone who was at tourney. Was the officiating in the Boone/ SW game as one sided as it looked on the computer? The announcers seemed to think SW got the shaft in that game.

You are fishing in the wrong pond there friend.

Sorry,.You wont get much sympathy out of this one.

I had the pleasure to take games in this week at Conner. Watched Boone play in all but one game and I would agree coach Fookes is an X factor coaching and influencing the refs. If one thinks about it that is what she is paid to do. Create whatever advantage a coach can to win games. If teams play themselves into her web then the X factor wins out. Unfortunately in my opinion when scouting Nell Fookes teams do not only need to measure the play of the team but her influence over the entire game. Any team that blames losing a game because of the refs then they put themselves in a position that the refs could determine the outcome. Take control of the game and good or bad calls will NOT be the determining factor of the outcome. Conner did a great job hosting a great holiday tournament and I look forward to next year. The ninth region is going to be very interesting for the balance of the year.

Taking adavantage of whatever you can to win games should be a very small part of what a high school coach gets paid for. In high school, coaches should be more focused on developing great young student athletes and being a great example. Not complaining about and trying to intimidate the refs the entire time and give a perception to your kids that the refs are against you. Later in the tournament, you could hear BC players complaining to the refs to call fouls or "that was a foul". That means it's overflowing to her team. In my opinion, high school athletes should NEVER talk or complain to the refs. I tell my kids in life, not everything is going to be fair and that you have to be able to overcome things you can't control. Not complain and blame things on everyone else. It's much more importat to take the refs out of the conversation and reach down to overcome anything that gets in your way. I tell them if there is a perceived bad call, get up and move on. I (as your coach) will determine whether more needed to be said about the call or question the refs. I tell them I have their back, but I pick and chose when to do that. Not on every call that doesn't go the way I think is should. Its also how you handle it. Do you scream across the court or do you pull the ref aside and ask for an explanation. You can make your point and have the same impact without screaming the entire time and trying to make a "show" out of it.

I agree that a coach should be a role model and needs to develop young student athletes. Unfortunately with HS sports however it is competitive sports. The fans and all of their opinions only make it worst. As an example we as fans, myself included list names of players that do exciting things on the filed of battle but do any of us give credit to all the kids on these teams and their contribution. In a perfect world your scenario is accurate and I believe Upward basketball is a great example of that type of development. This however is competitive sports, coaches and kids get criticized constantly and it is fans that do it. I like what you say and agree the balance must be maintained in developing young adults but until we as fans stop criticizing coaches, players and refs then I do think these coaches are paid to do what it takes to win! If they don't normally they get fired!

The good ones can do both without all the shenanigans! Many different ways to gain respect form players, parents and yes even referees!

By the way, I run a very competitive AAU org and I'm a high school coach.
