Tied after first Qtr on hot shooting by Birds. 16-16

2nd Qtr was difference in game. JTown's Hendricks had 15 pts in 2nd Qtr as Chargers outscored Birds 27-6. Birds had 19 turnovers 3 min into 3rd Qtr.

Highlands won the 2nd half outscoring JTown 9-8 in 3rd and 17-16 in 4hth.

#14 Williams the little guard had 6 treys and 22 pts. Hendricks had 23 I believe.

Birds had atleast 10 unforced turnovers. Stepped on line 3 times catching an entry pass on wing. Tried to throw atleast 10 passes over top of defenders who just snatched em out of the air.

Hpuliston had 16 and Witte had 7 all in 1st half. Most of Houlistons pts were in 2nd half.

Luke Turner DNP for Birds.

Looking at the previous posts/box scores, along with this one, sounds like Drew needs some help. What is going on in the post? When does Turner return (he would definitely help)? How was the pg play tonight? Who is up next for the Birds?

No question butthe offense wasn't the issue last night, giving JTown 26 extra possessions was the issue. The Birds buried 8 treys in the game which was a positive. Also, the Birds only had Witte/Houliston and True with extensive Varsity experience out there. True is coming along but needs about 5-6 more games before his timing is there. Drew is a nice surprise coming right into basketball with not much of a hitch. The rest of the kids just need varsity minutes. Feggins is just a soph and he is getting some good minutes that will help down the road. Losing Hergott and not having Turner didn't help either. Both could have been affective from the perimeter.

Drew was the recipient of a few nice assists and scored 14 of his points from the start of the second half until the 4 min mark in the game when coach sent in the JV kids. Witte started off hot scoring 7 in first half but only took 5 shots in his 10 min of 2nd half play. Turner surely would have helped primarily on the perimeter defense. JTown buried 10 treys against the Birds 3-2 packed in zone defense.

Pg play was fine, Hinkle did a nice job and stroked a couple treys, he can shoot well for a PG. The Birds take on Frankfort today at 4pm. Henry Clay (Top ranked state team) blew them out by 40.

Frankfort has a really good PG and a big kid that resembles Patrick Ewing. He plays hard and can be a space eater. I would probably expect the Birds to come out in similar zone and countdown on dribble penetration and neutralize the big kid. Hopefully they value their possessions better today.

The inability to protect the ball against "pressure" seems to be a problem for Highlands at all levels. Why is that? Does it have anything to do with putting 4 guys in the backcourt and thus you cannot punish a team for pressing you. You mention that numerous times they stepped on the out of bounds line, that should not happen if you are attacking a press from the middle of the floor rather than from the sidelines. Did Brendan Buten not play much? Thought he performed admirably at Bracken County.

What happened to Hergott?

Torn ACL in Bellevue game. Out for year.

That's a massive stretch -- Patrick Ewing????????????????. Frankfort is way below average. Their best player quit last week. I haven't seen Highlands play, but I will be disappointed if they don't win this game.

JTown had a 1-2-2 press that started about midcourt and the Birds attacked it pretty well getting a lot of open looks in the corner. We made them pay in the 1st qtr. Birds were actually up 9-2 at one point drilling 3 treys after beating the press.

Then a couple turnovers allowed JTown to get back in the game, namely the stepping on the sideline. (inexcusable IMO)

The turnovers were not as forced as you would think. It reminded me of when I coached my younger kids and they would not utilize a ball fake bounce pass. They kept trying to throw it over the top and it was clearly not working.

Ball fake, get the guy in the air and then bounce pass. Fundamental basketball

Buten came in at one point for a couple minutes early but didnt really return until Coach Flynn emptied the bench and put in the JV kids with 4 min left. They actually performed rather well as Ryan Green scored 5 pts, Kenny Ball drilled a 3 ball and Ramey battled down low.

The Starters need to step up the energy today and not be so lackadaisical with their passes. You cant be that way against athletic teams that can jump and run.

Take a little comfort in the fact that this issue (ie no bounce pass) is an epidemic in basketball at all levels and not just a Birds issue.

Gronotte first off bench, then Buten subbed in for Hinkle. Gronotte came in when Houliston got his 2nd foul early in the 2nd qtr. Brocket and Green also subbed in to play the last minute of the 1st qtr.

He went pretty deep last night.
