Basketball season for 2012/2013 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Bishop Brossart ? Remember, please be constructive.

Mustang can probably give you a better run down of the scrimmage with Boone County but, I think Brossart won 3 of 4 quarters.

Alex Trentman and Drew Burns will be a great tandem for Brossart. Ben Ubel, and Erik Rieger will do well at the guard positions. And of course, Justin Saunders is always solid. IMO, the key for Brossart will be their bench play. If they can get good, quality minutes from their bench, they have the potential to have a very good season. Of course, IMHO.

Scrimmages are just that. Our 1s held a sizable advantage over Boone, HOWEVER, the defending 9th Region Champs look little like they have in the past. Boone is in for a re-building year at best.

For a first trip over the track we will certainly take it, and move on to getting better, playing our second scrimmage against a quality opponent, and preparing for the opening of the season.

I saw BBHS 3 or 4 times last year. I thought there was a Jennings and Verst comming back at guard. Will they be a factor? Also there seemed to be a real log jam with so many sophmores. How do you think that will work itself out?

Jake Jennings is back. Nate Verst is no longer playing basketball. Seems like there is a lack in interest in basketball at Brossart this year. Not many sophomores went out for the team and some upperclassmen have walked away as well. What's going on in A-town?

Rumors of the Mustangs' demise is greatly exaggerated.

 

Our JV/Varsity roster is 15 strong, with the parity of the talent pool much more even this year than last. Both juniors from last year are back as seniors, as are 7 juniors and 6 sophomores. We also have a full field of 12 freshmen competing on the freshmen team.

As you are well aware, this is a very strong junior class, and the two seniors are solid. Players coming off of freshmen teams make evaluations about their future in the program and there is always natural attrition in that area. Last year our roster contained an unrealistic 12 sophomores. This year that number has become a more realistic seven. Players who are going to be asked to practice/play for five months and don't see a lot of return for their investments make informed decisions about their futures.

 

Nate Verst is the only prime-time player who chose not to return. He had thoughts of not playing his sophomore season in order to concentrate on baseball, but gave it another go. I'm sure that with his being the winning pitcher, defeating Harrison County in the baseball regional finals, and then upsetting Louisville St. Xavier in the state tournament as a sophomore with a 12-0 record, that Nate is probably getting quite a few feelers and invites to baseball camps and showcases, and this is the direction that he has chosen to go. My gut feel is that if this team performs as expected, Nate will still miss the competion on the hardwood and the roar of the crowd. I will personally miss seeing him compete at basketball this season, but a man has to do what a man has to do.

 

I can't imagine there are too many programs out there that wouldn't be quite happy to be in our position

as the top men off the bench?

My "unofficial insight" thinks that both seniors, Ben Uebel and Justin Saunders will be out there, and one or both of the 6'6"s, Burns and Trentman will start. Erik Rieger and/or Jake Jennings will probably round out the Mustang starting five on any given night. Matchups and potential mis-match opportunities will probably dictate who is in the lineup at tip-off time. Expect Ted MacDonald and Austin Shannon to get some QPT spelling the two bigs should they get tired or into foul trouble, and Spencer Hackworth and Jon Zink, although young and primarily cast for JV roles wouldn't hurt us if Coach Code should choose to go that deep and give those two some varsity experience.

Wow, really, Nate Verst not playing. That is a surprise, he could have been one of the better guards in the region. Assume he is consentrating on baseball, but it is a shame to lose him from the hard wood. He is a very good athlete. Good luck to Nate.
